20044 O,, S.G. 2 imageThe Largest Recorded Used Block of Plate 6The legendary 1840 1d Black, Plate 6, presented as an extraordinary block of eighteen (positions PA–PL and QA–QF) on a substantial piece of large-format legal correspondence. The upper row PA–PL forms a complete horizontal strip of twelve, an exceptional feature in itself, with the entire multiple securely tied by crisp red Maltese Cross cancellations.Margins are just clear to large all round, an impressive achievement for a multiple of this scale. A light archival fold crosses the piece, entirely consistent with original postal use. Minor imperfections are confined to PG and QE, each showing a tiny closed nick at the foot, and do not detract from the overall striking visual impact. Considering its remarkable size and survival on piece, the condition must be regarded as exceptionally fine. Note: This iconic exhibit item was showcased at the Royal Philatelic Society Centenary Exhibition, May 1940. The second largest used Penny Black multiple known (after the block of 24 in the "Chartwell" collection) and the largest used multiple of plate 6.A truly magnificent and historically important rarity, representing the pinnacle of classic British philately. 20045 ,, S.G. 2 imageA marvellous left mint sheet marginal block of four1840 1d Black, Plate 7 (BA–CB), left mint sheet marginal block of four, printed on experimental thin paper. The stamps display a fresh, rich colour and a fine, sharp impression, clearly showing the constant variety “CA with double C.” The left margin retains the distinct sheet watermark guide lines, adding further desirability and positional interest.Preserved in mint condition with original gum, the lower pair remains never hinged, while only light hinge traces are present on the upper stamps. Overall condition is exceptional for a multiple of this rarity.A magnificent and extremely rare block, seldom encountered in such outstanding quality. Expertise: Accompanied by a British Philatelic Association Certificate (2025). Provenance: Earl of Crawford and "a well known fellow of the RPS" Robson Lowe auction (7 May 1958). It retains part of the rare sheet inscription: "the labels ABOVE the address and towards the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the letter" — a feature of immense philatelic significance. The block is brilliantly fresh, with excellent margins on the other sides and practically full original gum. Typical of the plate 7 sheet, wrinkling and minor tone spots are noted purely for accuracy and do not detract from the stunning overall appearance.A world-class exhibition icon, combining rarity, scale, condition, and display impact, unquestionably worthy of the finest collection. It is the largest and the mint block extant.Note: The block is the largest part of a sheet known as the Crawford Sheet, broken up. 20054 ,, S.G. 2 imageThe Famous Ferry Mint Block of Six from Plate Eleven1840 1d Black, Plate 11 (AH–CI) - A marvellous upper sheet marginal block of six, bearing the rare and highly desirable inscription “AND SIDE of the Letter. In Wettin”, a striking positional feature of great philatelic significance. The stamps retain a fresh mint appearance with original gum, light overall toning as expected for a multiple of this importance. Notably, the upper four stamps remain unmounted (never hinged). There is some natural gum wrinkling and a crease between the second and third horizontal rows, characteristics entirely consistent with large multiples of this era and in no way detracting from the outstanding visual appeal.A superb and exceptionally rare multiple, representing one of the most desirable configurations of the world’s first postage stamp. Expertise: Accompanied by a Royal Philatelic Society Certificate (1955) and a British Philatelic Association Certificate (2025). Provenance: From the celebrated collections of the Earl of Kingston (1894), Earl of Crawford (1910), R. B. Sparrow (1911), Charles Nissen, Frank Wadham (exhibited in London 1925 and sold R. Lowe 1944), and Ferry (1953). This block adjoins the famous vertical block of six from the Bill Gross collection, which realised $320'000 at auction (approximately £150'000 at the time), an association of the highest pedigree. The strip is mint with original gum, with stamp TJ remaining unmounted (never hinged). 20058 O, S.G. 6 image1840 2d Pale Blue, Plate 1 (DG–DL) Horizontal Strip of Six on Naval Cover to HMS GorgonA rare and highly attractive maritime usage, this horizontal strip of six from Plate 1 (DG–DL) is cancelled by bold black Maltese Crosses and is presented lifted and hinged back to the original envelope. The letter was sent from Thurso, 24 October 1841, addressed to the British warship HMS Gorgon on Mediterranean Station, endorsed via Falmouth, confirming prepayment of the one-shilling Packet Rate.Margins are nearly all round, with only minor wrinkles along the top edge and a small marginal nick between DK–DL. A particularly appealing feature is the offset of the Thurso datestamp in brown, which partially ties the strip and enhances the visual and postal interest of the cover.A scarce and historically important usage, combining early adhesive postage with Royal Navy and packet-mail history, seldom encountered in such an impressive multiple.Note: The steam frigate HMS Gorgon was commanded by Captain William H. Henderson during her Mediterranean service from 1839–1842, including operations along the Syrian coast in 1840. Expertise: Accompanied by a British Philatelic Association Certificate (2025).
