Sir Charles Gavan Duffy (1816–1903) was an Irish nationalist, journalist, and later Australian statesman. Born in Monaghan, he co-founded The Nation newspaper in 1842, becoming a leading voice of the Young Ireland movement, which sought Irish
self-government and land reform. Elected MP for New Ross in 1852, he championed tenant rights but emigrated to Australia in 1855 after political frustration. There, he entered Victorian politics, serving as Premier of Victoria (1871–72) and was later
knighted. Duffy’s life linked Irish nationalism with Australian reform, and his writings remain influential in both Irish and colonial political history.
