32094 5X2 imageUS Confederate States, Athens Ga., 1861, 5c Red. Type I recut, some disturbed original gum, large to full margins all around, remarkable vibrant color, faint toning at lower left. VERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE ATHENS 5-CENT RED PROVISIONAL, OF WHICH IN ALL CONDITIONS ONLY 12 ARE KNOWN. The Siegel census contains one half-cover and seven genuine covers with the 5c Red. This count accords with the Crown census. All genuine examples are dated in March or April 1862. In addition, three used off-cover examples and this unique unused example are recorded. The Athens 5c red stamp is of the same rarity as the Blue Mauritius and in unused condition it is ONE OF THE RAREST STAMPS IN THE WORLD! With 1996 P.F. certificate. Scott 5X2.
