50134   image1852–57 7½d Yellow-Green (Plate Variety Position 57) – Toronto to London via Canadian Steamers 7½d yellow-green (Plate Variety Position 57), good to large margins, tied by Toronto grid on cover 12 November 1857, endorsed “By Canadian Steamer”. Carried by Allan “Indian” from Quebec 17/11 via Liverpool 25/11 to London. Note: The Canadian Steam Navigation Company ran twice monthly between Quebec and the Atlantic. From July 1853, rail connections to Portland, Maine, provided an ice-free port. The postal rate was 1s. sterling / 1s.10d. cy. (10d to Canada, 2d to the UK). In March 1854, the rate was reduced to 6d. stg. / 7½d. cy. (5d to Canada, 1d to the UK). During the Crimean War, the British government requisitioned steamships, causing the original Canadian Steam Navigation Company to cease operations. A new line, the Montreal Ocean Steam Ship Company (Allan Line), began sailings April–May 1856 between Liverpool and Quebec, adding Portland in winter. Letters had to be endorsed “By Canadian Mail Packet”. Provenance: Glassco, Carnegie (Image 1) (Image 2)

50136   image1852–57 3d Brown-Red on Medium Wove – Simcoe to Andover via New York / Cunard “Arabia” 3d brown-red on medium wove paper (defective), tied by “43” numeral (earliest recorded strike) on envelope with SIMCOE FE 11 1858 circular datestamp, endorsed “Via Halifax” and marked “More to pay 4½d”. The Halifax route was later barred via Hamilton, as the letter missed the steamer from Halifax and was diverted to New York, carried on Cunard “Arabia” via Liverpool 28/2, with PKT. LETTER handstamp on reverse, arriving Andover. Rate Explanation: The original Halifax route rating was cancelled. The letter was taxed “6d stg.”, which combined with the Beaver 3d totals 10½d cy., slightly above the correct 10d cy transatlantic rate. Comparative Example: A similar cover from the same correspondence appears in Luebke collection. Provenance: Richardson, Steinhart, Skywalk (Image 1) (Image 2)

50137   image1852–57 6d Reddish-Purple and 1/2d Rose Multiple – Windsor to Peebles via Hamilton / Cunard “Africa” 6d reddish-purple on very thick soft wove paper with four 1/2d rose on medium hard wove paper, mixed margins with some minor faults, one stamp lifted for inspection and hinged back, all on an envelope (wax seal removed) from Windsor 5/6/1858, endorsed “via St. Lawrence”. The letter missed the St. Lawrence route and was sent via Hamilton, carried on Cunard “Africa” via New York and Liverpool (with PKT. LETTER 20/6 handstamp on reverse) to Peebles, Scotland, with arrival backstamp. An exceptional cover with an elusive usage of the 6d reddish-purple on very thick soft wove paper. Franking & Rate Details: The cover was stamped “MORE TO PAY” in Canada, and a 1/2d deep rose added to account for confusion between sterling and Canadian currency. The entire franking was tied by “50” numeral. The remaining deficiency of 2d was noted with a “2” handstamp. Note: Illustrated in Arfken and Gems of Canadian Philately. Carried by the Allan Line steamer “Nova Scotian” from Quebec via Liverpool, bearing red “LONDON PAID JU 9 59” datestamp. From the well-known Brooksbank correspondence. Postal Note: Although there was sufficient time to catch the earlier Cunard “Persia” via Quebec, the letter was instead routed by the Allan Line. Covers from the Brooksbank correspondence are characteristically overpaid, likely due to the unavailability of 10d stamps in Barrie. This cover shows an overpayment of 4½d.
