1847 Post Office Issue (SG 1-2)
Lot Symbol Catalog No. Descrip Opening
70005   imageSperati Forgeries: 1847 “Post Office” 2d essays or proofs on cardboard paper in the correct shade and in the red that was used for the 1d value; the red is dated 3/51, indicating March 1951 and the blue has some partially erased production notes on reverse that probably pertain to exposure time and temperature. Also two glass clichés of the same 2d value in very light red and in greenish-blue (with image reversed) with some production notes. It is worthy of note that the 2d value has the tiny thin line in the bottom right corner, the secret marking that the Royal Philatelic Society put on reproductions to tell them apart from the genuine stamps. A stunning set of two matching pairs of this most iconic Sperati production, hitherto unrecorded, housed in Sperati’s cardboard box of photographic paper from the Lumière brothers. Additional note on rarity and relevance: Nothing about the “Post Paid” was recorded in the Sperati II handbook by Robson Lowe and Carl Walske, and no examples were found in the Musée de la Poste of Paris.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9) (Image 10)

70006   imageSperati Forgeries: 1848 “Post Paid” 1d, a spectacular assembly of twelve items for the production process of this famous stamp, comprising seven glass clichés in the various colours preferred by Sperati to create good contrasts, four clichés on celluloiud showing experimentation with colour shades, also proofs on medium wove paper, one exhibiting a double impression in black, with Sperati’s note “2/1”; a truly remarkable selection that shows the progression of the matrix from glass clichés to experimental impression. The lot is housed in Sperati's box "Nouvelles Plaques Eclair, Papiers Photographiques". Additional note on rarity and relevance: Nothing about the “Post Paid” was recorded in the Sperati II handbook by Robson Lowe and Carl Walske, and no examples were found in the Musée de la Poste of Paris.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7)

70009 O, 3 imageEarliest Impressions (SG 3-5). THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE 1d orange-vermilion, earliest impression, BLOCK OF SIX, positions 1-6, good to very large all round except bottom left and right, all cancelled by rare blue numeral '1' of Mahébourg and a portion of red London ds applied in transit, some usual toning, extraordinarily fine for such an important and large multiple, exhibition showpiece (SG £108'000 as singles) On the reverse of the block, we can see the outline of the flap of the original envelope to which it had been affixed, which is therefore not a crease. This spectacular block in its rich bright shade clearly shows, amongst other characteristics of the earliest impression the 'sticky print' and uneven inking of the beginning period. "The impression is so early that if the paper was yellowish it would undoubtedly classify as the earliest" (Burrus 1968). We now know that several different papers were used at the same time and can confirm without doubt that this block is from the EARLIEST impression. Arnold Rudge states "After very careful thought and examination I am convinced this block is an Earliest. There is also an amazing DOUBLE PRINT of the design best seen at lower right". This is the LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE of the Earliest impression and of the entire Post Paid issue. An outstanding item of phenomenal importance Provenance: Arthur Hind, March 1934 (Lot 249) Maurice Burrus, October 1963 (Lot 32), Hiroyuki Kanai, November 1993 (Lot 6) Tatiana, 2020 (Lot 20040) Expertise: Signed Herbert Bloch, cert.
