40216   image1840 2d deep full blue pl.1 EA-EF strip of 6, DI-DL strip of 4 and DG single on entire from Ireland to Trieste, Austria, each neatly and uniformly cancelled by a fine strike of the black Maltese Cross, with Ballycastle 13 4 41 despatch along with Dublin, London and Paris transits and finally a Trieste 26 AVR arrival. The senders prepayment of 1s10d was correct and intended to be forwarded from London by Thames Packet via Hamburg (1/8 for letters out of London, 1/10 for letters originating beyond London). The foreign Office however decided to send the letter via France (for this route 1/7 would have been sufficient, although only prepaid to the Swiss or German border e.g. the French offices of Huningen or Forbach). This route was confirmed by the Paris marking "A.T.F". In Trieste the letter was charged "38" kreuzer C.M. (Convention currency), to be split up in 14 kreuzer domestic charge (tariff on foreign incoming letters 1817-1842) + 10 kreuzer Swiss and 14 kreuzer French transit, the latter being prepaid, but neglected by the Austrians. A truly remarkable multiple franking from Ireland. Expertise: Cert. Brandon (1999) and Van Der Linden (1999). 40217   image1841 (13 May) 1840 2d blue pl.1 GH on a pair of covers with left and right vertical bisects of the same stamp; both sent from Hull to Beverley, both stamps with clear to good margins and both cancelled by two strikes of a black Maltese Cross, the left portion with Hull MY 13 1841 double arc ds on reverse and the right portion with the same despatch of the following day. Only three covers recorded with accepted bisect usages. An outstanding and incomparable pair of exhibition showpieces. In 1936, a solicitor in Hull discovered three bisected 1840 Two Pence Blue stamps in his office correspondence. He tore them off the letters and they were later sold at auction in February 1937, the pieces bore Hull or Lincoln postmarks. A few years later, a solicitor in Beverley turned out some old papers and threw into the bin some old stamps on letters. A friend called round later the same day and reminded him that another solicitor had found some old stamps cut in half a few years earlier, so the letters were retrieved and one example was found, then a search among old files produced another. Expertise: Each with cert. RPS (1977), "H" with Karl Louis Provenance Certificate (2005) and signed Enzo Diena. Provenance: "G" ex "Chartwell" (2012), "H" ex D. M. Brown (1938).(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7)
