The collection covers every aspect of the Rural Service from its inauguration in 1889 through to 1939. The extent of the collection covers postal stationery, stationery uprated with additional frankings, covers, postcards, registered, censored and express usages all on some more than 200 items in total. The highlights included examples of the first type Service Rural cds which are exceedingly rare and much sough-after, of the apparently only three recorded all are part of this outstanding collection. In addition there are nine examples of the first oval type hs out on the apparently 15 recorded. Unlike the first two types where the town name and or date were added by hand, the exhibit continues with the third type which show Service Rural cancels up to 1908 and after Rural Service mkgs. This third type the town name as part of the cancel. The main part of the collection details this type, with variations, in almost 100 offices throughout the country, many of which controlled two or three rural routes. In many cases covers show small oval bilingual village despatch hs with the Service Rural or Rural Service ds applied alongside. Outgoing mail is displayed not only to other local villages and main centres, but also worldwide; the usage of rural markings on incoming mail is much scarcer but is represented, as are registered, avis de reception and express mail, plus some useful postage due usages. Finally there are covers bearing two different rural mkgs, for despatch and arrival, covers with mkgs cancelling the stamps, being against Post Office regulations; plus rural mkgs on Post Office enquiry forms for missing mail. A truly amazing collection for the connoisseur and student of the Rural Service, an excellent basis for study and expansion(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)
