Forwarded from Bombay on 26 November by Dessabhoy Merwanjee & Company via Dhow to Zanzibar. Charged 65(c) on original departure and 1/-7 at England. Ex Walkley

30012   imageONE OF ONLY 3 COVERS KNOWN SENT VIA THE SEYCHELLES BEARING MAURITIUS STAMP USED IN ZANZIBAR 1864 (Oct) Envelope sent to Augustus Arnold in Care of Rufus Green & Company at Providence, Rhode Island (United States), noted in manuscript from “Leopold Acevedo / Zanzibar”. The envelope Bears 1/- & 6d Mauritius adhesive issues of 1863 each tied with “B64” numeral cancellations applied for use by Seychelles postal officials, with Seychelles, London and New York transits, fine and extremely rare. One of only three covers from Zanzibar bearing Mauritius stamps cancelled at the Seychelles, this being the earliest one recorded and hence the first cover from Zanzibar bearing adhesives for pre-paid delivery. A very important postal history item from Zanzibar. Notes: The Universities’ Mission archives note that Mauritius adhesives were the only stamps available in this time frame. Rufus Green & Company began trading in Zanzibar in 1852 and were an important player in breaking the near monopoly held by Salem traders for trade between the United States & Zanzibar.

The cover was sent via Lille, Paris (16 June), Aden Steamer Point (3 July) & “par Suez” and bears France 1862 80c rose on tied by “3463” numeral in diamond of dots and accompanying boxed “PD” in red, very fine, signed Calves, ex Walkley

Cooke), wife of the British Consul John Kirk, sent to England having been carried first to Bombay where Indian 1866-8 8a rose and 1860-4 8p lilac issue were applied and cancelled with duplex date-stamps, one of three covers recorded by Mrs. Kirk in the 1867 to 1869 time frame, very fine & rare, ex Sturton.

30016   image1875 (Feb) Envelope from the German Consulate at Zanzibar sent to Berlin noting a deficiency charge of “60” (pfennigs) displayed in blue crayon along with the standard “T” in circle tax marking. The envelope was incorrectly taxed as consular mail was presumably free. The envelope was sent via Aden & the P. & O.’s “Australia” carrying the cover through the newly completed Suez Canal and then to Brindisi, and from there via rail to Leipzig and to the final destination. The consular German seal was applied in blue on the rear flap. This cover was sent just eight months prior to the opening of the Indian post office at Zanzibar.

30017   image1875 (Jul) Transiting envelope from Calcutta, India, sent to Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope. Noted in manuscript “via Bombay & Zanzibar” with date-stamps Aden Steamer Point (9 Aug) & Port Elizabeth (20 Sep) on the reverse. The cover bears single 1868 8a. Rare destination and routing direction notation, illustrating the recognition of the recently established mail service to Zanzibar.

ZANZIBAR » ANTI-SLAVE PATROL (1864-1896)

30018   image1872 (6 & 13 May) Envelope with two enclosed letters from an officer A. Hanne on the H.M.S. “Columbine” noting in manuscript “Slave Cruising between Brava and Socotra”. Noted in the letters: “After leaving Seychelles we went to Zanzibar to fill up on provisions. When we arrived there found Livingstone expedition has just arrived in the steamer ‘Abydos’, Dawson the leader of the expedition was on board the ‘Britannia’ with me…” and further describes “We took a new interpreter in here and he said that when he was up at the Lakes he saw Dr. Livingstone who was all right except that his left arm was in a sling from the effects of a lion bite…” This cover is the earliest known officer’s letter from the British anti-slave patrol ships off East Africa. Franked with ten 1858-79 1d red pl.134 tied by “P” numerals. Small portion of backflap missing else fine and rare.

30019   image1874 (Oct 24) Officer’s letter sent from Naval Instructor Joseph D. Paul serving on the H.M.S. “Glasgow” to his fiancée Fanny May Gibbs at London. The log of the “Glasgow” records the ship arriving at Zanzibar from the Comoros Islands on 18 September 1874 and departing for the Seychelles on 5 October. B.I.S.N. Company’s “Euphrates” carried the mails from Zanzibar on 24 September, connecting with the P. & O.’s “Mirzapore” arriving at Southampton on 1 November and London the following day. The cover bears a block of nine and a strip of three GB 1858-79 1d red pl.120 correctly paying the 12d Officer’s rate. Very attractive and rare. Ex Geoffrey Osborne.

30022   image1889 (Aug) Sailor’s concessionary rate envelope from H.M.S. “Griffon” while at Pemba Island (Zanzibar), from the Sullivan correspondence sent to Birmingham, England (received 21 September), bearing Great Britain 1887 2d “Jubilee” tied by partial oval of 7 bars. The envelope was initialled by the Commanding Officer. Very rare as this is the only example from the slave patrol postal history emanating from Pemba, ex Sturton Notes: Michael Sullivan’s duties were as a skilled shipwright. The “Griffon” was on slave patrol duty off the east African coast.

30027   imageEXTREMELY RARE CONSULAR COVER 1878 (Jun 1) Stampless Envelope from the French Consulate at Zanzibar sent to Biol, France, and is signified with standard Indian “T” tax in circle marking along with “6” in black manuscript applied on arrival. The date-stamp canceller is used on the first day use of the Indian post office and is one of only two recorded used on first day. The French Consulate hand-stamp is displayed in blue. Some faults with tear at top and has some toning. Rare, ex Glassco and Rossiter.

30028   image1878 (Aug 19) Incoming envelope from New Bedford, Massachusetts (United States) addressed to Captain David Allen of the whaler “Minnesota” at Zanzibar via Brindisi (4 September) bearing 10c United States Banknote adhesive. Receiving date-stamp (17 October) similar to the first-type canceller date-stamp of the Indian post office at Zanzibar is shown on the obverse, very fine and rare exhibit quality cover, with fewer than four examples of the receiving date-stamp are recorded, ex Walkley Note: Only two examples of this correspondence are known to Zanzibar.

30029   image1878 (Dec 12) Envelope from Josephine Bartlett of the Universities’ Mission at Zanzibar sent to England via Aden (22 December) & Brindisi bearing single 1876 6a (corner perf. fault) tied by first type ten-bar obliterator of the Indian post office at Zanzibar with accompanying date-stamp (without year date). Miss Bartlett lived at Zanzibar until her death in 1895. Fine and rare.
