Cover slightly truncated at right upon opening, but very rare usage and route. Probably unique

42605 36 imageDescription1859 Cover from New York to New Ross, IRELAND, franked by pair and two single 1857 12c Black (plate 1) tied by red grills, sent via Boston and the Cunard packet “America,” and showing “38 / New York Br. Pkt.” cds, arrived too late for sorting in Liverpool so bagged direct to Dublin and struck by the very elusive “AMERICA / DUBLIN / PAID” cds. Backstamped at New Ross on reverse. The double weight letter rate was comprised of 10c for the USA portion and 38c credited to the UK = 32c packet fee + 6c domestic postage. Fine cover; signed by Alberto Diena and certified by Sismondo (2004)

Tipperary. Written works include ‘ Fiat Justitia’ (1835), ‘Fasti Ecclesiæ Hibernicæ’ (1848-50) and ‘List of Editions of the Bible 1505-1850’ (1852)

42609 65 imageDescription1867 (March 30) Trans-Continental & Trans-Atlantic large registered cover from San Francisco (Apr. 1 cds and s/l “REGISTERED”) to Dublin, Ireland, at 24 cents Treaty rate via American Packet (possibly Havre line “Fulton”), franked by FIFTEEN 3c values on front (target cancels) plus part of one (and several others missing) on reverse, endorsed “Per Overland…” (a reference to the PONY EXPRESS?) and sent via New York (May 11 red “Registered” cds) and London (red 2 MY 67 oval) with Dublin Registered bs (MY 22), probably 48c double weight letter + 20c reg’d fee. Some faults (incl. portion of back flap missing) as may be expected with such a massive franking; rare trans- and inter-Continental registered usage with all the markings recto and verso. Spectacular item

42610   imageDescription1869 (Jan 27) Whaling correspondence from New Bedford, USA, to Captain Allen of the barque “Merlin” at Mahé, SEYCHELLES, with 1867 30c Franklin F grill (trimmed perfs at left) tied by fancy cork cancel, New Bedford, New York and “ETATS-UNIS / SERV. AM. CALAIS” cds adjacent, Marseille bs, fine and very attractive destination mail plus a rare stamp on cover (Scott $2’000 on cover) Note: The Barque “Merlin” sailed from New Bedford in June 1868, returning July 1872. During those four years, she took over 1’100 whales during several circuits of the Indian Ocean. Captain David Allen commanded, with his wife Harriet and daughter Helen (called Nellie) also on board. Harriet carried on a correspondence with her cousin, who was house-sitting to the Allens at 173 Grinnel St., New Bedford.
