1020   imageISLAND OF GIGHA - RARE "REGISTERED AT GIGHA" 1d REDS COVER: 14 Nov. 1866 env. (small closed tear at foot of address) "Registered" to Paisley franked by a Vertical Strip of Four + single 1d Red 'Stars' tied by fair to fine Lochgilphead "232" Numerals but also endorsed "at Gigha" beside "Registered" on the front by this tiny island's P.O. during a period when it had no handstruck mark at all (its first mark was issued in 1859 but then withdrawn in 1860, so no example has ever been found. The next mark was not issued until 1888 and we have not recorded any mark of Gigha prior to 1900). Only Registered mail was marked as coming from the island, in the 1860-88 period and only 4 other covers have been reported so far. Exhibition Item.
