998   imageMAIL RELATING TO THE 1930 "COLUMBIA" FLIGHT: 25 Sept. GPO Trans-Atlantic flight notice advising that "160 letters will be accepted up to 10:30am at St John's PO" that day, plus interesting env. with contents. The sender, Dorothy Glover, prepared an env. on Cochrane Hotel stationery & enclosed a letter, addressed as required in the PO notice. Her assistant got to the PO before opening time but did not reach the counter before the stamps were sold out. The original env. (without stamp) & letter dated 25 Sept., along with a press cutting, were sent in a similar env. with an apologetic letter dated 10 Oct. to Dr. Griffiths in Newport, Shropshire, on the S.S. Newfoundland, with double-ring "PAQUEBOT/LIVERPOOL/17 OCT 30" cds. All items in fine condition. An interested insight into the flight & stamp issue.
