F.W.Webb. Includes a range of c.37 KGV first flight, 'experimental' flight and other covers. Earliest being 8 Aug. 1932 cover to Rangoon carried on Air Orient Saigon-Marseille service and 18 Apr. 1933 cover from HK to Abergele carried on same service; also, examples of Chinese cover from 1936 RAF 'Goodwill' flight, 1936 HK-Penang-London flight covers (8), Hong Kong-Shanghai (2), Jul.1936 experimental flight HK-Calcutta (not adopted as an alternative to Penang). Various others inc. HK to Foochow (C.N.A.C.), Dutch Air Mail service and several Pan-Am first flights to Hawaii, Guam, Manila, etc. Examples of 1938 "All up" service and a range of KGVI period covers inc. 714   imageVERY RARE MANUSCRIPT "10 Cents" BOAT OFFICE ENDORSEMENT ON EARLY MACAO COVER TO CANTON; 29 Nov. 1834 EL (some wrinkles; contents ex destitute American seeking help to return to home) from "Macao" to "Canton" carried by the Union or St. George of the Local 'Boat Office' Post service and so with the Post's manuscript "10. Cents" charge (single rate) on the top flap. Canton Boat Office did not employ a handstamp for this 10c charge, although Macao Boat Office did from 1832 to 1838. Only two examples of this Canton Manuscript "10. Cents" marking have been recorded – the other example was in the Richard Chan collection and was from the same correspondence but dated 27 Sept. 1834 [Cavendish Oct. 2003, lot 430, realised £800+BP]. This first local Boat Office mail service linking Canton and Macao started in 1832. The Macao "Boat OFFICE/10 Cents" marks (1832-38) are well known, but this is one of only two recorded covers with this matching Canton "10 Cents" manuscript mark. Important Exhibition Item. 716   imageSHANGHAI HYPER-INFLATION PERIOD COVERS: Group of commercial airmails ex a British fountain pen factory owner & possible missionary(?) & his sister in Shanghai (25) or USA (2, where he escaped to) to his adoptive father in Bournemouth with frankings illustrating the inflated rates between 7 June 1948 & 26 Apr. 1949 during the fall of the Nationalist government inc. the 'Golden Yuan' period, the devaluations, and beyond. Inc. 8 Nov. 1948 env. franked $4,050,000. All seemingly complete with typed contents. The author describes the war, conditions & his possible escape options: "So far the government is determined to defend Hschow at any cost and the communists are having a tough time. [...] The poorer classes go back to their countryside homes where food will be easier to obtain while the rich classes have already moved [...] down to either Canton or Hong Kong. Most of the government relatives move to Taiwan (Formosa) where the troops are being trained.". Fascinating lot.
