401   image1938 'SNOW CRUISER' ILLUSTRATED ENV: Fine envelope printed by the "Research Foundation of the Armour Institute of Technology' depicting "The Snow Cruiser Reaches the South Pole" - made for an unsuccessful attempt to achieve this, which was abandoned in 1938. The blank env. was discovered in the 'Snow Cruiser' under 24 ft of snow during a salvage attempt in 1958 and inscribed by a US Army Lt. Colonel. The envelope illustrates the 'Snow Cruiser' carrying an aeroplane with the handstamp "OPERATION DEEP FREEZE/ANTARCTICA". An early Deep Freeze item. This was Lot 382 in a Bethunes 2005 auction realising A$266. Written up in Polar Post in Sep. 1985. (Image)
