361   image1934 KLM "UIVER" COVER COLLECTION INC. CRASH MAIL: Binder housing a collection of 9 covers plus other items associated with the ill-fated DC-2 aeroplane. Includes a pair of 14/15 Nov. 1934 covers with Netherlands Indies frankings from Batavia to London and Medan to Rotterdam. Also 3 official KLM envelopes mailed from Australia to GB or Holland, two with Royal Dutch Airways "Uiver" cachets in violet. All mailed after 5 Nov., so sent by surface male. Lot includes 4 Uiver crash covers. The plane left Amsterdam on 20 Dec. 1934 destined for the Dutch East Indies but crashed at Rutbah Wells in Iraq killing the 4 crew members and 3 passengers. One of the covers appears to be unscathed, the other three with varying degrees of fire or water damage. Lot also inc. a contemporary 64 page book detailing the MacRobertson Air Race and a KLM printed leaflet relating to consigning mail on the Special Xmas & New Year's Mail Flight which ended in disaster.Cross Reference: CRASH & WRECK MAIL, NETHERLANDS COLONIES (Image) (Image2) (All Images)
