1806   imageVANCOUVER ISLAND - RARE EARLY INGOING MAIL - 1/- RATE EX SCOTLAND VIA OVERLAND U.S., ETC.; 22 Mar. 1866 env. at the 1s-0d (up to ½ oz) all-inclusive rate to “Vancouver’s Island” with two 6d Mauves (pl.5) tied by the “ARDGAY/49” duplex and having a partly fine red “PAID/DERRY/COL.PACKET” transit cds (23 Mar.) on the front, showing that it caught the Allan Line S.S. ‘Damascus’ to Portland (Maine; 4 Apr.). It then went by closed bag by rail to St. Louis (Missouri; the end of the railway line at the time), by regular U.S. mail to Atchison (Mo.) and then on by ‘Western Express’ stagecoaches firstly to Salt Lake City (being at risk of attack from Natives on that section), and then to Folsum City (California). It was then taken by the regular post to SF, and on overland by mail to Victoria on Vancouver Island. The total land journey was c.4,282 miles; the filing note shows that it took 78 days. 1812   imageRARE DUBLIN RED OVAL "ABOVE/+NUMBER+/PRIVILEGED" ON COVER WITH RARE "KINNETY/74" MARK; 26 Aug. 1828 E franked from the small village of "Kinnety" to Dublin signed by the local M.P. "T[homas]. Bernard" with a fair rare red "KINNETY/74" mileage on the front, but on arrival in Dublin it was found that Bernard had sent more than 10 Free letters that day and so there is a mainly very fine and very rare red oval framed "ABOVE/+NUMBER+/PRIVILEGED" mark (Galland/Colton only recorded 3 examples on cover; this is a fourth) nicely placed on the front and it was charged "8[d]" which was changed to "9" for the extra Dublin Penny Post charge (black oval city 1d Post ds on flap).
