1774   imageVERY RARE DUBLIN EXPERIMENTAL DIAMOND "186 186 186" ROLLER CANCEL ON 1d RED BLOCK OF FOUR COVER; 27 May 1859 long env. (minor edge wear) from Dublin to “Ballymote” with a block of four 1d Red ‘Stars’ tied by two ‘rolls’ of the very rare “186 186 186” cancel; it weighed above one ounce & up to 2oz, hence the 4d rate. This Dublin “Roller Cancellation” was tried out in the late 1850s but was very little-used and so this is one of only three complete covers that have been recorded (one printed matter & two 4d-rate covers, one of which has not been seen since 1971). Curiously, both this example, and the other letter-rate cover have the Dublin duplex struck additionally to mark the date of posting, so it was not a very efficient way of postmarking letters quickly! The Printed Matter cover only has the Dublin backstamp rather than an extra duplex on the front. One of the rarest of all Irish and of all Line Engraved QV Cancellations. This 1d Paid mark is rare because it seems only to have been used on mail that did not transit through London; few examples known. [Ex Cavendish Dec. 1997 auction, lot 719; realised £805.][Illustrated in RM, p.34] & 12 Feb. 1840 EL (toned and with loss of text and address along one edge; professionally silked back and front) headed & countersigned for a Marine private "Thomas Perkins...on Board HM Brig Weazle, Corfu" to GB (most of address lost) with a mostly very fine very rare red circular "FALMOUTH/1d/PAID" mark (Willcocks CO 401; thin "1" in "1d" type) which was only used on such prepaid 1d Concession Rate covers arriving at the port and so a form of Ship Letter marking, with a PS; "Please to direct for me 'Malta or elsewhere'...". P.O. manuscript endorsement "recd. torn at the" beside the partly fine "H & K PACT" part arcs backstamp cds with initials below on the reverse and having part of the H&K PO red wax seal with "R/PO" closing one of the tears on the front, Dec. 1864 env. ex Paris to the same General Brown in Dublin with very fine "9"-code "H & K PACT." cds on reverse, and 1909 official "City of Dublin Steam Packet Co."
