THE MOST FAMOUS & IMPORTANT ITEM OF ALL THE POSTAL REFORM PROPAGANDA - THE 1838 GIANT "SINGLE" & MINI "DOUBLE" LETTER-SHEETS; Very fine June 1838 matched pair of the 1st-edition Giant & Miniature Mercantile Committee on Postage (M.C.P.) propaganda letter-sheets (the large one folded neatly to fit on an album page) designed by Henry Cole. A similar pair was displayed to very good effect in the House of Commons by Robert Wallace and they were arguably the most influential 'Mercantile Papers' production of the M.C.P. which eventually won the campaign for Cheap Postage in 1839. The giant letter-sheet has a partly printed address-panel:- "SINGLE LETTER,/UNDER ONE OUNCE IN WEIGHT./LONDON./To be kept dry, or the Single Postage will be raised to Fourfold Postage" (because the sheet weighed just under an ounce and the crazy rates were single for one sheet up to an ounce but 4 rates for a sheet weighing above the ounce). The text inside is equally significant; "POSTAGE CHARGES IN 1838. This Sheet, 35 inches by 23 inches, weighing One Ounce, is charged as a SINGLE letter, whilst the accompanying Letter, weighing 7 grains, or under the 60th part of One Ounce, is charged as a DOUBLE Letter...". Together with the original matching tiny double letter headed "DOUBLE LETTER,/SEVEN GRAINS IN WEIGHT." above a "LONDON" address, with the enclosure having a similar printed explanation about it being only 4 x 2½ inches but costing double the postage of the giant sheet!! It is recorded that only 500 pairs of this fabulous Postal Reformers propaganda were printed in 1838, and only 3 or 4 now survive in private hands. Six or seven of the similar 1839 versions have been recorded in private hands, some of which are postally used. [This example has a red wax seal and the pencil inscription "Editor of Hull Saturday Journal" (which was very pro-Postal Reform in 1838) indicating that it was actually sent out in 1838 to Hull (by private means) and was probably intended to be posted back to the M.C.P. in London. Only 4 examples of this 1838 type have been recorded in private hands; one used (sold recently at auction for £5,526 inc. BP) and three unused (inc. this one and the one sold in Cavendish's Nov. 2009 auction; lot 511, realised £3,400+BP). Highly Important Postal Reforms Exhibition gem. FIRST DAY COVER OF UNIFORM 1d POSTAGE - 10th JAN. 1840 - AVOIDING POSTAGE, SENT "IN PARCEL"; 10 Jan. 1840 EL (dated in two places; full typed transcript) from "Essex St., Strand" (London) to a firm of "Solicitors, Rye", endorsed "In Parcel" below the address; the contents note that two lengthy legal documents were enclosed, so this letter was sent in a package by private coach; there was no P.O. parcel service until 1883. With faint offset of London tombstone ds (10 Jan.??) and of a hs "1" on the front at left of address (presumably from long-term filing beside another cover). Rare postage-evasion First Day Cover. FAMOUS "PAUL PRY AT THE POST OFFICE", AUTOGRAPHS, ETC.; Very fine uncreased 2 July 1844 Punch magazine print (200 x 275mm; neatly fits album page) showing Sir James Graham peering into the end of a sealed envelope surrounded by discarded (presumably opened) letters, with one letter on the floor addressed to "J. Leech"! Plus little-known matching Sept. 1844 John Leech cartoon page of "PEEL'S DIRTY LITTLE BOY" (showing James Graham in a mess!) and another of 22 Mar. 1856 also by Leech showing Graham as a teapot fighting a kettle-shaped Sir Charles Napier. Plus 4 other prints, 1826/9 pair of free fronts signed by Graham or Thos. Duncombe, and a 1972 Italy 90l stamp of Mazzini. Fine group of Reform Campaign items rarely seen in this original form. SPECTACULAR LARGE CARD WITH CIRCULAR EMBOSSED QUEEN VICTORIA HEAD AKIN TO WHITING'S WORK; c.1840 large multicoloured advertising card (27cm x 36cm; faults at right just affect "NT" of "PATENT" well clear of Queen's head) with text in gold on blue ground but also having a central heavily embossed white Queen Victoria cameo portrait on a red ground within blue & gold circles. The text reads; "BY SPECIAL APPOINTMENT KIRKBY, BEARD & Co.'s NE PLUS ULTRA AND ROYAL DIAMOND PATENT PINS & NEEDLES. MANUFACTURERS, TO HER MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY, QUEEN VICTORIA. LONDON." Very similar to work by Charles Whiting in this period, but without his imprint (or that of Dobbs). Marvellous Exhibition Item showing the wider use of embossed Queen Victoria profile heads.
