(very slightly reduced at left; slightly smudged address) to Karachi, cancelled by a fine strike of this rare F.P.O. datestamp, countersigned for an Indian soldier at "Saukin" [sic]. Very rare. DONGOLA CAMPAIGN "SOUDAN" O.P. (1m-10pi) TIED TO PAPER BY "WADI HALFA" CDS EX KITCHENER's PERSONAL TELEGRAPHIST:Part sheet of plain lined paper (ant damage at lower left) with 8 values each tied by a 30 Sept. 1897 "WADI HALFA" cds (the 2pi affected by ants; plus a separate undamaged similar loose 2pi value). Originally hinged to card with the pencil note "Given to me by Gaddis Abdelsaid, the recently retired Post Master of Khartoum, who, as a young man accompanied Lord Kitchener as his personal telegraphist throughout the Dongola Campaign. Gaddis Eff stated that the date - 30 SEP 97 - was the day Lord Kitchener (and he) left Wadi Halfa for the front. Damaged by white ants." Remarkable souvenir. EARLY ENGLISH TRAVELOGUE COVER EX REMOTE "HUDIKSWAL" AT 108ö RATE TO G.B. VIA STRALSUND ETC.; 23-26 Aug. 1858 EL started in the northern Swedish village of “Hudikswall” (193 miles north of Stockholm, on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia) and completed 83 miles further south in “Gefle” where it was posted. It has two 2nd-Issue 30ö Orange + two 2nd-Issue 30ö Red-brown all tied by small “GEFLE” cds (top 3 stamps with horiz. wrinkle); it was endorsed “Via Ostende” and so has a boxed “Aus Schweden/per Stralsund” with a very fine Aachen “P.” in circle on the front, with a red “LONDON/PAID” cds (3 Sept.) nearby. It was written & signed by the famous English traveller (and Physician to the Queen) Sir “Henry Holland” and sent to his namesake son in London. The contents are a fine travelogue describing the journey from Stockholm and the remote forests; “Looking from the window of my lean & comfortable little Inn, you might fancy yourself in one of the towns of the Norwegian Coast… covered with pine forests. The voyage here from Stockholm was a calm & beautiful one of 22 hours… Gefle… I made this journey [here] by land…& accomplished 60 miles in the day… Another & stranger sight is the eternal Electrical [Telegraph] Wire, with its posts & other appendages following the road… as far as the extremity of the G. of Bothnia. It must be a wire of easy & indolent life, for few messages either of business, or social affection, are likely to be sent by it…”.
