1253   image1867 COVER TO CALIFORNIA: A rather worn env. (faults) ex Windsor (12 Feb. 1867 cds on back along with oval "H/FE 13/1867/NS" ds) to San Francisco endorsed "By Steamer from N. York" franked 5c + 10c (SG 12 & 16) with blue ms "due 5" on front adjacent to "BOSTON BR. PKT./FEB/17/5" cds. The cover travelled from Windsor via Halifax to New York probably on the Cunard 'SS China' ex Liverpool 2 Feb., hence the Boston ds on the front. From New York it went in a sealed bag via Aspinwall and Panama to San Francisco - the trans American railway did not complete until 1870. The 15c franking is incorrect, as in 1864 the rate from Nova Scotia to the Western US changed from 15c per half ounce to 10c per half ounce - so this is a 5c underpaid 1oz letter. (Image)
