1200   imageVERY EARLY PRESTAMP COVER EX "WESLEY DALE" MISSION STATION TO G.B. BY WHALING SHIP; 21 Mar. 1826 E (which originally included Rev. John Hobbs’s “Oct. 30 [1825] to Feb. 22 1826” Journal) was sent from the short-lived “Wesley Dale”, now known as Kaeo, near Whangaroa, which was founded as a Mission station in 1823 but sacked by the Maori in January 1827, directly to England. It was carried by the whaling ship ‘Marianna’ (Capt. Gardner) on c.1 April 1826, which arrived in England on 4 Sept. 1826 and so has the boxed “DEAL/SHIP LETTER” mark on the front, with a “1/4” postal rate (8d Ship Letter + 8d for 72 miles to London; red 5 Sept. cds on reverse). This is one of the very earliest recorded Ship Letters from New Zealand still in private hands. The original contents of this letter, Rev. Hobbs's journal, are in the Methodist Missionary Society archives; they were focussed on Hobbs’s need to have a suitable girl of his mother’s acquaintance to be sent out from England for him to marry(!), his poor health, problems with servants/workers, and the slow progress of making converts or translating religious texts into Maori. [Ex John Bishop, RL 19 Sept. 1990, lot 1852; ex John Woolfe, RL 3 Oct. 2006, lot 3 realised £850+BP. Also illustrated in the NZ Encyclopaedia, Vol. VII, p.35.]Cross Reference: SHIP LETTERS, EARLY LETTERS, KENT (Image)
