1120   imageST. CATHERINE'S TO GLASGOW "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" BY "H.M.S. EUROPA" REF. "COMMOTIONS", ETC.; 26 May 1795 EL from “St. Catherine’s, Jamaica” (a slave estate producing tobacco, sugar, etc.) to the ‘tobacco baron’ “John Riddell” in Glasgow endorsed by “H.M.S. Europa” (50-gun warship that had been involved in the capture of Haiti from the French in 1794). It reached Portsmouth in Aug. 1795 and has the large “PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LETTER” mark (Rob.S5; 1782-1800) and “1/3” rate. It presages the imminent Maroon Revolt, and refers to the increasing challenges of doing trade during the War with France; “…times are hazardous… Goods [are]… all sold to Spaniards for Dollars, which in the case of the very worst, it would be no difficult matter to convey on board of Men of War… whatever commotions may be internally excited in the Island… there could be no Danger of transporting from Kingston an board ship all your Money & valuables…”. Three months later, the Second Maroon War started. Cross Reference: SLAVES AND SLAVERY (Image)
