CEYLON/SRI LANKA
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
838   imageCOLOMBO - RARE "CEYLON/PACKET LETTER" OVAL DS - CLARET-PURPLE STRIKES WITH "COLOMBO/POST PAID" MARKS; 11 Oct. 1816 cover from a Missionary in “Colombo” to London prepaid the single “3/6” Packet Letter rate with two strikes of the rare claret-red “CEYLON/PACKET LETTER” ds (of which few have been recorded and perhaps only this example in red) (16 Oct. + 7 Nov.; on front & back respectively), as well as matching “COLOMBO/POST PAID” [3/6]” marks on both back and front. It was sent “Pr. [Packet Ship] Eclipse” to London (9 Apr.; red ‘tombstone’ “PAID” ds on the front). Unusually this Packet Ship actually dropped off its letters at Falmouth before it reached London (‘Lloyds List’ of 11 Apr. 1817 notes arrival of the “Eclipse, [Capt.] Burford Off Falmouth” on 6 Apr., noting that it had left Bengal [Calcutta] on 21 Aug. 1816, and then sailed via “Pr. Wales’s Isld.” (Penang) on 18 Oct., “Ceylon 19 Nov., C.G.H. 26 Jan. [1817] & St. Helena 10 Feb.” en route. So it was charged "1/-" from Falmouth to London; an incorrect “1/1” rate was crossed out twice. Important and possibly unique Exhibition Item.
