669   imageEARLY P.O.W. COVER EX U.S. SHIP'S CAPTAIN CAPTURED BY BERMUDAN PRIVATEER - WITH BOSTON MS "Sh 10[c]"; 6 Feb. 1795 EL (toned & rebacked but complete) from “Bermuda” ex a merchant-ship’s Captain, “Joseph Hy Woodman” to his ship’s owners/agents in his home port of “Newburyport, Mass.” giving them the news that his ship and crew had been captured by a Bermudan privateer on their homeward voyage from “Port de Paix” (Haiti). It was sent by private ship and has Boston’s “March 30. Sh 10” ms markings; the 10c charge was the 2c Ship Letter rate + 8c ‘between 30 and 60 miles’ inland rate. It includes; “…after…Sailing for Home on the 18 Dec. from Port De Paix, I was so unfortunate to fall in with a Bermudan privateer on the 20 [Dec.] and sent to this Place for Adjudication. My vessel is not condemned yet, but I have no Expectation but [that] she will be as they Condemn all American ships from any French port. My trial will be next week and if Condemned I shall appeal, as all other Americans have done… This is the first opportunity I have had of writing to any part of the States… the Bermudans are still fixing out more Privateers to take Americans from French ports, and the Judge of this Court of Admiralty is Determined to Condemn till orders to the Contrary comes from England… I had no French property on board… [just] coffee and sugar… Capt. Corning and myself are the only two of Newburyport who are so Unfortunate to fall a prey to such Pirates…”. Recent research (notes included) has shown that Woodman’s ship a schooner ‘Charlotte’ taken by Bermudan privateer ‘Retrieve’ (Captain. Nash) [per ‘Bermuda Gazette of 27 Dec. 1794, p.4].
