DONAGHADEE - RARE "1d/PAID" MARK - PAIR WITH TWO SEPARATE (FOR 2d RATE?) OR SINGLE STRIKES: 23 Sep. 1840 E (overall creasing & wear
probably commensurate with the original number of enclosures) to London endorsed "P.P." unusually having two (mainly fine) strikes of the rare pale red "1d/PAID" mark side-by-side at bottom left matching the partly fine "DONAGHADEE" cds at top right;
it seems likely that this was an over-weight letter at the 2d rate (the part contents include mention of "enclosed bills"). Plus 18 Jan. 1842 E to Hillsborough with a single v. fine red Donaghadee "1d/PAID" mark with a green "DONAGHADEE" cds nearby.
Rare pair; we have only recorded one other Irish double-strike UPP 1d mark on a 2d-rate cover- the Dublin example in the Chadwick collection [AE 27/9/2019 lot 1710; realised £700 + BP], although two examples from Scotland have been recorded. (2
covers) Cross Reference: UNIFORM 1d POSTAGE PERIOD (Image)
