EARLY POSTAL HISTORY, 1573-1700. VERY RARE "for carreyer vid" 6d POSTAL RATE CORSINI COVER TO LONDON WITH RED CRAYON "26" (?
WAY-BILL No.); Very fine 13 Feb. 1573 EL [in Italian] from "Echseter" (internal dated heading; also with "Da Esettere" filing note) to "Mag[ist]ri. Do[mino]. Felipo Corsini in Londra" with the bold endorsement (in a different hand) "For carreyer vid"
on the front, along with a red crayon "26" which was probably a waybill no. of the Exeter to London carrier. The letter concerns the efforts of the sender, T. Baldisare di Mafio, to recover Corsini's stolen goods and the need to offer a reward. Of
the 25 letters from Exeter in the Corsini Correspondence, only six have postal rates (3 at 4d and 3 at 6d, dating from 1573 to 1591); this is the earliest of those six. Only one earlier internal British postal rate has been recorded [Aug. 1571 to
Corsini endorsed "paye a groat" ex Dover]. Highly Important Exhibition Quality Item. [Ex RL 'Corsini' auction, 11 June 1986; lot 22, realised £900+BP. Ex Spink 16 Apr. 2010; lot 1110, realised £3,200+BP.] Cross Reference: EARLY LETTERS, EARLY

EARLY POSTAL HISTORY, 1573-1700. VERY RARE "for the carier iiijd" 4d POSTAL RATE CORSINI COVER TO LONDON WITH RED CRAYON "26"
(? WAY-BILL No.); Very fine 13 Feb. 1573 EL [in Italian; with full typed transcription and translation] from "Echseter" (internal dated heading) to "Mag[istri]. D[omino]. Felipo Corsini in Londra" with the clear endorsement (in a different hand) "For
the carier iiijd" [4d] on the front, along with a red crayon "26" which was probably a waybill no. of the Exeter to London carrier. The letter concerns the efforts of the sender, T. Baldisare di Mafio, to recover Corsini's stolen goods and lists 14
prime suspects who have apparently been handling the stolen casks of sugar or salted herrings. Of the 25 letters from Exeter in the Corsini Correspondence, only six have postal rates (3 at 4d and 3 at 6d, dating from 1573 to 1591). Only two earlier
internal British postal rates has been recorded [Aug. 1571 to Corsini endorsed "paye a groat" ex Dover, and the previous lot]. Important Exhibition Quality Item. [With copy of JG-T's 1985 article about this cover's discovery; it had been described as
being from Antwerp in the RL 1984 Corsini auction.] [Ex RL 'Corsini' auction, 4 Sep. 1984; overlooked in group lot 193, which realised £113 inc.BP. Subsequently ex James Grimwood-Taylor, and Arian Almond.] Cross Reference: EARLY LETTERS, EARLY

EARLY POSTAL HISTORY, 1573-1700. RARE "De pourt 4d" POSTAL RATE CORSINI COVER TO LONDON; 13 Oct. 1579 EL [in a difficult
French hand; small stain on address, and some thinning of address sheet, possibly due to poor manufacture?] from "Echseter" (internal dated heading; but also with "Da Exerter" filing note) to "La presssant & Loi Dom[in]e a Monsieur Le sire Felipes
Corsyny a Londres a Londres" with the clear endorsement (in the sender's own hand) "De pourt 4d" [originally thought to be 8d, but in our opinion clearly 4d] on the front. Of the 25 letters from Exeter in the Corsini Correspondence, only six have
postal rates (3 at 4d and 3 at 6d, dating from 1573 to 1591). Exhibition Item. [Ex RL 'Corsini' auction, 11 June 1986; lot 23, which realised £280+BP. Subsequently ex Michael Jackson's Grand Prix runner-up Exhibition Collection.] Cross

EARLY POSTAL HISTORY, 1573-1700. GREAT FIRE YEAR "OC/22" BISHOP MARK - GT. YARMOUTH TO EXETER VIA LONDON WITH "Forward"
ENDORSEMENT; 19 Oct. 1666 EL from "Southtowne [Great Yarmouth]" to "Exon [Exeter]" endorsed "Post paid to London 3d" and "Forward 3d" and having a mostly very fine "OC/22" london transit Bishop Mark on the reverse. This is believed to be the
2nd-earliest recorded post-Great Fire Bishop Mark (an "OC/19" example on a cover from Dublin has recently been found). The long interesting contents include; "...the sickness [Plague]is very sad at Norwich, still 225 last week of all. The Coaches
goes betweene Norwich and LondonCross Reference: [go]as for merely as I heare. Mrs Bendish still continues in the Citty... I suppose chambers are very deare at London. Capt. Ames tells me he cannot justly tell, but he thinkes your old quarters

EARLY POSTAL HISTORY, 1573-1700. CREDITON "1666" LETTER AT 3d RATE TO LONDON WITH "IA/28" BISHOP MARK; 26 Jan. "1666" EL
(minor creasing and internal wear) from "Westwood" (a property on the edge of Crediton; unsigned but in the distinctive cramped hand of Simon Snow addressed "To Mr. Thomas Pengelly at Mr. Angiers neare ye Pumpe in Bpsgate Street, London" and charged
"3" with a partly fine London "IA/28" arrival Bishop Mark nicely placed on the side-flap. It seems more likely that this letter was written in January 166/7, because Pengelly's address in London had changed, as per the contents of the previous lot
(Bishopsgate escaped the fire whereas most of Fenchurch Street was burned); but if January 1667 then it was actually dated closer to the Great Fire than if it had been 1666. [Ex Peter Burden, Cavendish 7 Mar. 2013; lot 1254; realised £260+BP.]
