EARLY FRANKS & THE LONDON "FREE MARKS", ETC. 1690-1840. ORIGIN OF "0"-CODE CROWN-ON-TOP "[crown]/FREE" DS - UNCODED/"+"-CODES
SHOWING FRAME BREAKS; 10 Oct. to 4 Nov. 1839 strikes (all uncoded except for six 29 Oct.-4 Nov. examples) of this late-usage crown-on-top "FREE" ds that was subsequently (posthumously, probably in 1852) used outside the P.O. to enhance free front
collections with an "0" code. This detailed study shows the outer-frame damage that links this mark to the "0"-codes; 10 Oct. 1839 pair of fronts + 17 Oct. 1839 E (with "MISSENT/TO/GALASHIELS" + "LARGS/PENNY POST") with the complete outer-rim; plus
19 Oct. 1839 pair of fronts + a front with flap (with v. fine rare "Missent to/Chertsey" + "Chertsey/Penny Post"; ex Bottomley) showing only the 2 o'clock rim break; plus 22-29 Oct. 1839 fronts (6) with the 2 & 10 o'clock breaks, and 1/4 Nov. 1839
front (2) & envs. (2; one with flap lost) all 4 showing the final 3-rim-breaks type (as per all the "0"-code - 'posthumous' - usages). Remarkable story; see the John Colton section in the Galland book. (3 covers + 14 fronts) (Image)
