749   imageHENRY FAWCETT (BLIND M.P./P.M.G. FAMOUS FOR PARCELS POST, ETC.) - CORRESPONDENCE TO SIR J.C. CAMPBELL; Jan. 1881 - July 1884 series of five autograph letters (probably all written in the hand of Fawcett's wife and amanuensis, Millicent, nee Garrett) and all addressed to the American musician and campaigner for the education of the blind) [later Sir] Francis J. Campbell (1832-1914) who had been, like Fawcett, blinded in an accident at a young age. The letters all relate to Campbell's "Royal Normal College and Academy for the Blind" near Crystal Palace. Two are written on crested Post Office notepaper, two on that of the House of Commons, and the first from his home address in Cambridge. A rare archive relating to this extraordinary M.P. and campaigner for improvements in the British Post Office both before he became P.M.G. and while he was in office at the P.O.; all written while he was P.M.G. (from May 1880 to Nov. 1884). Cross Reference: AUTOGRAPHS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, PARCEL POST LABELS (Image) (Image2)

750   imageHENRY FAWCETT (BLIND M.P./P.M.G. FAMOUS FOR PARCELS POST, ETC.) - SIGNED LETTER + O.H.M.S. ENV. FRONT; 9 Sept. 1882 autograph letter (probably written in the hand of Fawcett's wife and amanuensis, Millicent, nee Garrett) addressed to his friend "[W.] Botting" in Brighton asking for his company on a cliff-top walk near Rottingdean the following week. Botting was a builders merchant (of Ship St., Brighton) and his friendship (and these walks) with Henry Fawcett is noted in 'The Life of Henry Fawcett' by Leslie Stephen, 1885. This letter was sent from Fawcett's home address in Cambridge, but he was still P.M.G. at the time. Plus an unrelated 27 May 1881 front sent O.H.M.S. - because signed "H. Fawcett" at lower left - to "Sir Walter B. Barttelot, Bart, M.P." in London having a very fine red "LONDON/OFFICIAL PAID" cds on the front. Barttelot was M.P. for West Sussex at this time. Fawcett covers with his official P.M.G. authorising signature are seldom seen. (2 items)Cross Reference: AUTOGRAPHS (Image)

The Bampton cds that replaced this UDC was issued on 6 May 1841 (PO Proof Book) so this Mulready must have been sent between 10 Feb. 1841 (when red MX ink ended) & c.8 May 1841. 752   imageFAMOUS PUNCH CARTOON OF SIR JAMES GRAHAM AS "PAUL PRY AT THE POST OFFICE" + ENDORSED COVER; July 1844 Punch magazine print (180 x 247mm; cut to neatly fit album page) showing Sir James Graham peering into the end of a sealed envelope surrounded by discarded (presumably opened) letters! The famous Punch cartoon ref. the "Secret Post Office" Anti-Graham Campaign that is often illustrated but rarely seen in this original form. [A similar example in Cavendish's June 2012 auction, lot 920, realised £240+BP.] Plus 3 smaller related 1844 ILN cuttings (one with an engraving of Duncombe), and a remarkable 5 Jan. 1855 env. ex "BUNGAY" (fine cds) to London with 1d 'Stars' tied by v. fine "147" numeral but having an anti-P.O. interference endorsement on the flap; "N.B. This Envelope contains nothing that would compensate the risk of indulging unlawful curiosity". The latter was sent almost 11 years after the Anti-Graham scandal!! 753   imageRARE "POSTAL DISTRICT ENVELOPE" USED IN 1857 WITH 1d RED 'STARS' FROM LONDON (TO NEWNHAM GLOS.); 6 Mar. 1857 early usage (earliest known?) of "T.R.P. & Co's POSTAL DISTRICT ENVELOPE" (some creasing etc., and all 4 flaps trimmed but without loss of internal text and not affecting the address side); with printed list inside of London "Principal Places" and their new Postal District initials. Franked by 1d Stars (light crease) tied by London "11" Diamond numeral with part cds on flap) and addressed to "Newnham, Glos..."; there is no embossed oval "POSTAL DISTRICT" device on the top flap (it was lost when the flap was trimmed). We have only recorded 4 other examples of this District initials type of envelope - advertising the very first attempt at postcodes - and this is one of only two pre-1858 examples that we have seen. [An example sold as lot 857 in Cavendish's 11 Apr. 2003 auction for £408 inc. BP; the defective cover in the Cavendish 'Gavin Fryer' auction, lot 1087, in Oct. 2024 realised £440+BP.] Very few known.
