NOTICE WITH BLUE "CAVALLINI" STAMPS; 3 Dec. 1818 4-page printed "MANIFESTO CAMERALE" Notice (19 x 29.2 cms. max.; the two pages separated and folded for display on a single album-sized sheet) printed in Turin having superb strikes of the three Cavallini marks in blue (light crease) on the back page; circular 15c (light stain), oval 25c and octagonal 50c, with text explaining (in Italian) how the marks were to be used as a Tax on letters sent outwith the Post Office system by private means. Most unusually with contemporary manuscript endorsement in Italian on the front stating that it was "Published on the 1st January 1819...". Important Historical document telling the story of these famous "Cavallini" forerunners of postage stamps. 155   imageSIEGE OF PARIS - BALLON MONTÉ - CRASH IN NORWAY OF 'LA VILLE D'ORLÉANS' – COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL; Rare Dec. 1870 small brass medallion (14mm diameter) made at the time near the spot in Norway where this balloon famously crash-landed after being blown way off course. A local Norwegian metal-worker created these commemorative medals from metal recovered from the balloon's salvaged parts while the wrecked balloon was displayed at Drammen in December 1870.
