1065   imageCAMPAIGN LETTER FROM THE BRITISH ARMY IN GHENT DURING THE WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION: Fine and rare Sept. 1742 EL (some faults & repairs) from Philip Browne, an officer in the King's Own Cavalry Regiment, with the British forces in "Ghent" en route to join King George II campaigning on the lower Rhine. The letter to his brother, a merchant in Grace Church Street London, was carried by private means to London and posted there (with Bishop Mark) endorsed "One sheet of paper". The contents inc. information on troops and preparation for battle, but also of business opportunities "...Lord Stairs hath sent order for us to be ready to take the field as soon as possible, and General Honeywood hath issued out orders for all the officers to be provided with baggage Horses by the 7th inst. ... would i sell any of my horses could dispose of them to advantage, they being now as dear again as in England..." and a passage regarding purchasing pistols at too high a price so that he was making too little profit on them! 1068   imageUNIQUE(?) HAND-DRAWN 1d LILAC COVER CELEBRATING THE FIRST LONDON TO BRIGHTON MOTOR CARS EVENT; Remarkable 21 Nov. 1896 env. (edge wear slightly affecting title to drawing only) to Manchester (21 Nov. backstamp) with the 1d Lilac (tied by a "KILBURN/N.W./670" duplex) incorporated into the drawing of a very early motor car (thought to be the lead car of the event; a Panhard Lavassor) at the right of the address and with an inscription above; "A SOUVENIR OF MOTOR CAR SATURDAY NOVR. 14 1896". The artist had clearly attended the event on the previous Saturday, which was the very first 'run' of the famous 'London to Brighton Rally' event.
