468   imageRARE OCEANOGRAPHY INSTITUTE DRIFT-CARDS LANDED IN ICELAND, GLASGOW/BERGEN PAQUEBOTS, ETC: 1954 quartet of the special GB reply-paid PCs dropped by plane into the Atlantic in plastic bags and washed up at various places. Three of the PCs have Iceland frankings (the other was sent from Iceland but has no stamps and was cancelled by the circular barred "LONDON" printed matter cancel) tied by unclear cds's:- ?Strond, ?Vik & ?Hofdabrekka (only c.52 cards are recorded as having been washed up in Iceland. Plus rare unused drift-card (No.7556) with its explanatory sheet (+ 2 corks and a "Porothene" envelope in which the cards were dropped). Plus 1926 PPC (stamps on picture side) with black or purple boxed Reykjavik "Paquebot" or purple rubber "Paquebot", 1938 pair of larger envs. to GB with Geyser frankings tied by Glasgow cds with matching scarce mainly v. fine boxed Glasgow "PAQUEBOT." marks, 31/5/1945 censored (late date) env. to GB & 1941 'Times' cutting showing Churchill visiting Iceland. SMITH's FORCE"; Remarkable 22 Oct. 1817 EL (fully typed transcript of very interesting chatty contents; some mainly internal/reverse stains consistent with vinegar disinfection) from "Quebec" (Canada) to an officer of the "4 Regt. Light Cavalry, Madras, East Indies" carried under cover or by private means to London and posted there (28 Nov.) with a mainly very fine crowned 2-ring "INDIA PACKET LETTER/G.P.O/LONDON" cds (small scuff) on the front and so charged "3/6", and endorsed "P. [Packet] Lord Wellington" on the flap. Redirected on arrival in Madras to "Gen[era]l. Smith's Force" (involved in the 3rd Anglo-Maratha War) and so having very fine strikes of the very rare Madras "INLAND POSTAGE/KINGS POSTAGE" on the reverse ("POSTAGE" crossed by closed seal tear) endorsed "1r 8a 6p" to pay on delivery. Extraordinary country of origin for mail to India at this early date. [A similar 1818 cover from this correspondence - but merely from London - sold for US $2,600 on 26 June 2024 in New York.] Superb and astonishing Exhibition Piece for both Canadian and Indian Collectors. RARE MADRAS "KINGS POSTAGE/INLAND POSTAGE" MARKINGS ON COVER FROM QUEBEC TO ARTILLERY SURGEON; 23 Mar. 1817 EL from "Dumfries" (Scotland; boxed mileage mark on the front) to a "Surgeon to the Battalion of Artillery, The Mount Madras" routed via London (26 Mar.) with a mainly very fine crowned 2-ring "INDIA PACKET LETTER/G.P.O/LONDON" cds on the front and so charged "4/7½" (1/1½ inland + 3s-6d Packet rate), and endorsed "P. [Packet] Rochester" on the flap. Redirected on arrival in Madras the addressee (presumably up-country with his Batallion) and so having mainly very fine strikes of the very rare Madras "INLAND POSTAGE/KINGS POSTAGE" on the top flap endorsed "2r [+] 2r" to pay on delivery. "KAMPTEE/POST PAID" HAND STAMP ON COVER WITH RARE LONDON BOXED "INDIA LETTER"; 21 Feb. 1827 EL from Kamptee to Ireland (cross written but with full typed transcript) endorsed "Via Bombay P.Pd" and rated "1/6" on the front; on the reverse there is a fine strike of the rare boxed London "INDIA LETTER" (Tab.In9, 3 years earlier than recorded; closed seal tear just touching frame at left) beside a very fine red boxed "KAMPTEE/POST PAID" hs (earliest recorded date?). The contents include; "...The Belfast [news]papers...I received 29 of them a few days ago, which cost me one Rupee each"! Attractive and probably unique combination of scarce/rare markings. [Ex Drs.
