Russian Post offices in the Dobrudja, Tulcea 1881 (Oct 9, julian): Envelope from Tulcea to Aleppo Syria, bearing Russian Levant 1879 (June) 7 kop. carmine & green on horizontally laid paper, tied by fine "R.O.P.i T. /
TULCHINSK: AGENSTVO 9 X 81" datestamp (Tchilinghirian fig. 56), indistinct ALEXANDRETTA transit cds alongside. Upon arrival Turkey 5 piastres postage due was applied on reverse and tied by "ALEP TURQUIE 23 OCTOBRE 1881" datestamp. Adhesive,
cancellations, and envelope in good state, but used as a notepad for Arab calculations, an extremely rare poffice. Cert. RPS (2026). Rarity: In 1957 Tchilinghirian knew only this and another cover originating from the ROPiT office in Tulcea with this
cancellation being the template for fig 56 and originating from the collection of Dr. Wortman, the other cover ex collections Snegireff and Gordon Torrey. In between two additional covers came to light, one ex the collection Cihangir, the other now
in the collection of Heinz Glättli. Note: All four known covers are from the years 1881 to 1883, thus at a time when the Dobrudja had already become part of Romania. They were sent to Livorno, Hammersmith, Constantinople, and here to Aleppo.
