DDSG Offices in Syria, Beirut 1839 (Sept 23): Entire letter from Beirut to the Sardinian Consul in Alexandria, Egypt, struck by extremely rare double-circle "D.D.S.G. / BAYROUTH / P.P." handstamp in black (unlisted in
Tranmer), applied on the DDSG shipping line Smyrna - Beirut - Alexandria, the entire internally dated 23 September 1839. Slitted and fumigated upon arrival, struck on reverse by oval "ufficio sanitaria / in / Porto Vecchio" (unlisted in Meyer). Cert.
Goller (2026). Note: The DDSG was founded in 1829 and was originally thought to provide transport and postal services on the Danube and some of its tributary rivers such as Tisza and Save. However, already in the 1830s it extended its services far
beyond that river into the Black Sea and even into the Marmara and Aegean Seas. At the end of this decade postal services from Beirut and Jaffa were offered. Tranmer mentions in his treatise on the Austrian Post Offices abroad, part 8 (1976) on p. 21
that the creation of a Constantinople - Beirut - Alexandria line of the DDSG was decided in 1838 but no material is recorded. With a first journey on 1 June 1839, the vessel ‘Seri Pervas’ was running the line Smyrna - Chios - Cos - Rhodes - Larnaca
down to Alexandretta, from August 1839 further via Beirut & Jaffa down to Alexandria. But already in July 1840 during the Egyptian - Ottoman War and finally with a severe accident of the 'Seri Pervas' the history of this line found its end. DDSG
services in the Eastern Mediterranean in general have been short living, as already in 1845 all DDSG agencies outside the Danube (and Odessa as exception) were taken over by the Austrian Lloyd, the two companies were dividing 'the world of shipmail'
between themselves. Rarity: The present cover is a new find and one of three recorded with a DDSG BAYROUTH handstamp. The two other covers were written two weeks earlier on 14 September, 1839 and directed to the Sardinian Consul in Aleppo (ex Sawaya,
Corinphila sale 342 (Nov 2024), lot 7006), and the last one accepted by the Beirut DDSG agency as late as July 1841 (ex Corinphila sale 367 (June 2026), lot 564), one year after closure of the DDSG Syrian coast line. All were unknown to Müller in his
monograph dealing with Austrian pre-stamp mail (1960) and its two supplements, and as already mentioned also in Tranmer - Austrian Post Offices Abroad, part 8 (1976). The present BAYROUTH cover is therefore an extremely early postmark recorded from
any postal service used in Beirut, much earlier than any French or Russian service available. Reference: "Austrian Maritime Rivals" by Chris Smith, pages 306-312; Displayed and discussed in the publication "Der Postdienst der Ersten k.k. priv.

DDSG Offices in Romania, Calafat; 1866 (Aug 29): Cover to Vienna bearing DDSG 1866 17 kr. scarlet perf. 12 in a combination franking with Austria 1864 Arms 5 kr. rose perf. 9½, first the Austrian adhesive tied by CALAFAT
despatch cds in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 782), then the DDSG adhesive partially applied over the Austrian one and tied by the same datestamp, manuscript "Turn. Severin" note on front, reverse with WIEN arrival (Sept 2). Manuscript '10' (kreuzer)
taxation on front. File folds affect the Arms definitive, nevertheless an impressive combination cover of DDSG Shipmail and Austrian inland mail. Cert. Goller (2026). Note: The DDSG stamp should have covered the journey along the Danube to Orsova,
the Arms adhesive the journey beyond. However, the cover could not be handed in at the Austrian office in Alt-Orsova as the DDSG journey was interrupted in Turnu-Severin presumably due to low waters and the further transport was done with a small
vessel which could pass the Iron Gates of the Danube. This posting in Turnu-Severin instead of Orsova led to the taxation of this cover. Provenance: Collection Steindler, Robson Lowe, Basel (March 1972), lot 57; Collection Dr. Jerger, Dorotheum,

DDSG Agencies in Romania, Galatz 1872 (April 17): Entire letter sent by the DDSG Agency in Galatz, directed via Constantinople and Vienna to Marseille, struck on front, on reverse and as part of the Agent's inside signature by
dateless oval "DONAU DAMPFSCHIFF / AGENTIE / GALAZ" handstamp in blue. Front struck by French AVRICOURT entry cds (April 29) in blue and "A." handstamp in black. Reverse shows the unusual routing with datestamps from CONSTANTINOPEL (April 22), WIEN
(April 27), PARIS (April 29), and MARSEILLE (April 30). Charged upon arrival with handstruck '10' décimes. An exceptional item. Note 1: This administrative DDSG handstamp is rarely found as marking on postal material, the describer is aware of only
another cover with a comparable usage on cover to Constantinople from the 1870s (ex Corinphila sale 201 (May 2015), lot 8316). This handstamp is also found in rare cases as obliterator of DDSG adhesives, for example on 10 kr. green type I ex
collections Antoine & Steindler, and on 10 kr. scarlet, one example ex collection Puschmann, the other ex Gregory Frantz. Note 2: In volume I of his magnum Opus, Gertlieb Gmach asks on page 233 for the authenticity of this cover. His suspicion
comes from the multiple strikes on one cover which seems to be, however, the standard procedure if one looks on the two covers known to the describer. What he finds even more suspicious is the difference between the strike on the cover and the
presentation as figure 815 in part Six of Tchilinghirian, a completely understandable caution, especially if one looks on the different size and width of the GALAZ inscription. However, the strikes on the other cover and the strikes when used as
obliterator look pretty similar which suggests that the presentation in Tchilinghirian may not reflect the actual dimensions of this handstamp. Provenance: Karamitsos sale 197 (November 2004), lot 3152 (Image 1)
