cover imageBritish Missionary Mail 1831 (Aug 23): Entire letter from the Reverend David Griffiths in Antananarivo to William Alers Hankey of the London Missionary Society in London, endorsed "Pr. John Craig" at top and annotated "DG" at lower left, struck on reverse with framed "INDIA LETTER / PLYMOUTH" in black (Robertson fig. In1), London cds in red on reverse (Feb 24, 1832) and rated "1/3 d." to pay upon arrival in manuscript. An overall journey time of 185 days. The letter mainly refers to the annual expenditure of the Mission. Rare and early - this is the second of the five letters known from Griffiths. Note: Gfiffiths and his wife Mary were sent to Madagascar by the London Missionary Society in June 1820, to join Reverend David Jones who had gone out in 1818. They preached twice every Sunday and established day and night schools, Mary teaching the girls. In 1824, the schools in the capital numbered 300 scholars, and there were 32 other schools within the country. Griffiths and Jones, with King Radama I, devised a Roman-letter alphabet for Malagasy and in 1827 a printing press was obtained, and the following year a catechism, a hymnal, and some schoolbooks were published in Malagasy. In 1828 King Radama I of Madagascar, who had been a friend to the Christian missionaries, died at the age 36. A period of confusion followed, and the mission's work was for a time interrupted. In 1831, the New Testament was published in Malagasy, and a large part of the Old Testament; the first Bible to be published in an African language (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

cover imageBritish Missionary Mail 1832 (April 11): Entire letter to William Alers Hankey of the London Missionary Society, endorsed "Tananarivo, April 11 1832" at top, and annotated "JC" at lower left corner, written by the missionary James Cameron, with contents stating that he was enclosing bills from Mauritius for some £ 53; struck on reverse with fine framed "INDIA LETTER / DOVER" in black (Robertson fig. In1), London arrival in red (Dec 27), Rated "1/8 d." due to pay, with annotation, presumably from the Foreign Post Office desk of a total of "£ 1 and 3 d." outstanding for letters to the LMS received. Rare and very fine entire that displays well: the sole recorded entire from James Cameron. Note: James Cameron (1799-1875) was an industrious Scottish artisan missionary, he constructed a brick residence at Ambatonakanga (1826), he employed and educated 600 young Malagasy in the construction of machinery and other public works projects. Upon the death of Radama I in 1828, and the accession of his wife, Queen Ranavalona I, to the throne, with her subsequent attempt to rid the island of foreign influence, Christian proselytising was forbidden and those practicing the new faith were actively persecuted. He made gunpowder and soap for the Queen, and due to his influence the Mission remained active during the years 1829 to 1835 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

In3), with London cds in red on reverse (Sept 29) and rated "1 s." to pay upon arrival in manuscript. An overall journey time of 193 days. The letter refers to the Griffiths salary of £ 150 to be paid shortly for wages until next September. Rare and early - this is the last of the five letters known from Griffiths (Image 1) (Image 2)

cover imageBritish Mail / Queen Ranavalona period 1845 (Oct 26): Entire letter written by Montagu Burrows on board "HMS Sappho" at the Cape of Good Hope to his brother in Gosport, Hampshire with weak Cape of Good Hope oval despatch in black and manuscript "p.p. 7d." in red ink, and was carried back on the "Emerald Isle" and struck on arrival with London SHIP LETTER in black and red datestamp (Dec 29) with Gosport arrival of the following day. A historical letter from the 'closed' period. Note: In early 1845 Queen Ranavalona I decreed all Europeans left in Madagascar would be liable to slave labour, in response to the alarm of traders in the ports, the British and French bombarded the port of Tamatave on June 15, 1845. HMS Sappho was in the Mozambique channel at the time, standing as alert for HMS Conway. The letter states "We are anxiously waiting for instructions from England about this Madagascar business. If we do nothing in it, we shall go on cruising for slavers just the same as hitherto for 1½ years at least...". Sappho was a 500 ton brig patrolling the Mozambique channel targetting Portuguese and Brazilian slavers (Image 1) (Image 2)

cover imageBritish Missionary Mail 1862 (Nov 12): Entire letter from Reverend William Ellis in Antananarivo to Mrs. Higginson (wife of Governor Higginson) in Mauritius, struck on arrival with straight line "Ship Letter" in red (Proud SL 11). Original manuscript charge of "8" pence altered to "6" in red crayon, reverse with "Mauritius" arrival cds in blue (Dec 22). Interesting contents regarding Ellis's health and he also states "I send you a little photograph of my residence which is near the Palace". Scarce, just two letters from this small correspondence bear the Ship Letter mark in red. Note: King Radama II invited Reverend William Ellis (1794-1872) of the London Missionary Society to Madagascar in 1861: thereafter Ellis developed a highly influential relationship with the King. The British Consul resented his influence as did the French, not least over religion. King Radama II tactlessly invited Ellis preach in Ambohimaga, previously forbidden to outsiders, and this contributed additional political unrest resulting in the assasination of Radama II on May 12, 1863. Ex the "San Francisco Find", an extremely rare multiple Gi = £ 5'200+. Note: In 1899 W.C. Pickersgill, the British Vice-Consul in Antananarivo, was ailing with "Madagascar Fever" and was reposted to the milder climes of San Francisco. Despite loathing "timbro-maniacs", he took with him a small group of Consular Mail stamps in sheets. These he sold to an unknown dealer in San Francisco probably upon his arrival but certainly before his death there on 20 July 1901. The multiples later suffered during the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. The stamps reappeared many years later to George Holschauer at a "Westpex" show, fused together by heat and water from the ensuing fires and fire fighting, some were saved by an art conservator (Image 1) (Image 2)
