King George V Memorial Essay, 1936: 1½d essay, imperforate Proof in pale grey-black on gummed paper, wmk. Block Cypher, the lower margin endorsed “2 CB” in pencil, with part original gum on reverse and hinged to part of King
George’s Jubilee Trust mourning notepaper, this mounted on second Jubilee Trust notepaper embossed in red with a Crown at top and bearing a typed explanatory notation of the Essay, signed “Proofed by Sir Donald Banks” at foot; the Essay with two
diagonal creases and with torn corner at upper right, nevertheless extremely rare, in this format possibly unique in private hands. Note: The typed notation on the King George's Jubilee Trust notepaper records that eight examples of the “IN MEMORY”
stamp were proofed following a proposal that the stamps be issued and sold at twice their face value for the benefit of the Trust; after consideration, the scheme was abandoned. The proofs were printed from a plate of six produced by Harrison and
Sons. In this design the Vandyk portrait replaces the Mackennel head used for the definitive issues, while sprigs of rosemary, for remembrance, replace the dolphins. Provenance: Collection ‘Monarch’ (Part II), Spink, 8 October 2008, lot 548 (Image 1)
