6016 cover image1913 (Nov 11): Silk wrapper from the Tibetan Government in Lhasa directed to Lönchen Shatra in Delhi, India. The routing of this official letter was meticulously documented on the wrapper as every post office forwarding this letter between 11 November and 17 November (1913) applied its postmark and noted the date of forwarding resulting in bilingual intaglio strikes of Lhasa, Dongkur, Chushur, Peltsi, Nangartse, Gyantse, and Phari. At a later time the address and the transit notes were translated and noted in English. Note: Lönchen Shatra Paljor Dorje, commonly known as Shatra (c. 1860 – c. 1923/1926), was a Tibetan politician, with the rank of Lönchen being compararable to a Prime Minister. In 1913/14 he took part in the Tibetan-British-Chinese Simla Convention and represented Tibet to negotiate borders and status alongside British and Chinese representatives (Image 1) (Image 2)
