3797 * image'V.R.I.' with raised stops 1900 (Post March): Second Setting 1 s. on 1 s. orange-yellow of 1868/94 issue, the so-called 'error of colour', a fresh and fine example with large part original gum. Accompanied by RPSL certificate (1983). Note: The National Bank of South Africa returned approximately 50 of the 1 d. brown and 100 of 1868/94 1 s. orange-yellow for overprinting after the Occupation of Bloemfontein on 13 March 1900. The overprinting was done and the stamps returned to the bank. The matter was referred to Major O'Meara who made efforts to recover the stamps. However, the Major's superior Officer, Colonel Williams, was president of Sidney Philatelic Society and it is more than likely that he, and others, shared the spoils, as most of the 50 examples of the 1 d. brown survived, whilst fewer of the initially more abundant 1 s. orange-yellow value (Gi. 110a / 121a) appear to have been donated to collectors but were, in actual fact, destroyed. For further information see Hisey & Bartshe pages 146 and 165. Gibbons = £ 1´300 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

3799 **/*/bof image"V.R.I." with thick "V" 1900 (Post March): 3 d. on 3 d. ultramarine, the spectacular irregular block of 32 from Setting V (blocks of 12 and 20 rejoined), all stamps showing "Surcharge Double" variety, positions 25-26/31-36/37-42/43-48/49-54/55-60, of excellent colour and appearance with Plate Number "1" at base and showing Surcharge Double on thin "V" (Gibbons Type 32) stamps (28), Surcharge Double on thick "V" stamps (3) and a single example of Surcharge Double / Inverted "1" for "I". Illustrated in Hisey & Bartshe on page 214. A few minor imperfections, entirely to be expected in a multiple of this magnitude, but of no significance and none affecting the appearance. The surcharge double / Inverted "1" for "I" on position 37 is unique - notwithstanding that the multiple represents 53% of the possible examples. A fantastic and highly important multiple for the specialist Gi = £ 13'400++. Note: These stamps were obtained in 1901 from Sergeant Ledgerwood of the Scots Greys at the Military P.O. in Bloemfontein on the morning of issue. They remained in the possession of Mr. George Slade of Sea Point until October 1933. Provenance: Collection 'Bloemfontein' (Argyll Etkin, December 1999, lot 204), `Besançon´ (Corinphila Auction 238, June 2019, lot 4489) (Image 1)
