4254 **/*/bof imageRegistration Stamps 1894/1920: A specialised group of predominantly unused registration stamps, spanning the classic issues of the 1894 through to the later printings of the early 1920s, with a strong emphasis on the distinctive triangular designs. Of particular note is; an unused 1919 Buchanan 10 c. black & blue complete sheet of twenty-five displaying scarce variety "Imperforate between" pairs. An impressive multiple, seldom encountered in full sheet form, fresh colours, well-centred and retaining original gum, mounted in margins. This is complemented by later surcharged and overprinted types, as well as examples showing different settings and print characteristics, offering useful scope for further study and reconstruction. In addition, the group includes a range of singles, pairs, some used examples, together with further triangular issues arranged for study. Condition is generally fine to very fine for the period, with some minor gum disturbance or typical handling in places, but overall a clean and attractive assembly (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9) (Image 10) (Image 11)

4255 **/*/(*) imagePostage Dues 1894: An extensive and highly specialised study presented upon five exhibition pages. Comprising Die Proofs, Proof Colour Trials and imperforate issued pairs and set of singles. The lot includes: Small die proofs on thick paper (.0043 in), including black printer’s working proof and 4 c. in rose proof from the reference set. A remarkable series of fourteen die proof colour trials (2 c. to 40 c.) in complete range, printed on a variety of coloured papers (yellow, beige, blue, grey, greenish-yellow, etc.), all showing the characteristic mirrored die impression at top "1711". An exceptional set of imperforate issued pairs (2 c. to 40 c.), gummed, representing the issued designs prior to perforation. Produced by Waterlow & Sons in limited quantities (2 c.: 10,000; 4 c.: 5,000), these trials and proofs document the experimental stages of colour selection and paper variation. A rare and visually striking archival assembly, illustrating the full production evolution of Liberia’s 1894 Postage Due issue, with material seldom encountered outside major collections. A well-developed one-lot study of the surcharge issue, neatly presented on exhibition-style pages. The lot is predominantly unused, with strong emphasis on reconstruction and plating, and includes:, multiple examples of the 1905 1 c. and 1909 2 c. issues surcharged "L.F.F.", clear study of Setting One with positional pieces (positions identified), range of surcharge varieties, including overprint missing and inverted on vertical pair (only known), inverted overprints, doubled letters, and misplaced settings, scarce tête-bêche pairs, including annotated examples (noted as very limited recorded), examples showing rejoined and reinforced clichés from the original sheet. Group of multiples and positional strips/blocks illustrating constant varieties, large sheet material, including a substantial pane/complete sheet of the 1 c. and 2 c. surcharge, useful for positional study and reconstruction. Five covers, one of which is to Tombouctou with 2 c. in combination with 1916 surcharge issue, as well as uprating a 2 c. postal stationery envelope and two 2 c. on registered mixed franking envelope to Honduras and two philatelic covers (Honduras ands Monrovia). Condition generally fine for this difficult issue, with some typical gum disturbance, minor faults and ageing on larger pieces, but overall a clean and very presentable specialised holding. A scarce and under-studied issue, rarely seen in this depth (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9) (Image 10) (Image 11)

4257 * imagePictorial Issue 1892: Official Overprint Trial Essays. A unique and highly important group of nine trial overprints, comprising values from 2 c. to $5, each overprinted “OFFICIAL” in large-format diagonal overprints in varying colours. These essays represent the experimental stage preceding the adoption of official service stamps, illustrating the initial overprint format later replaced by the more prominent “O S” issues of 1894. The only recorded examples of these trial overprints, making this an exceptional and unique assemblage of great significance. Provenance: Collection Dr. Roy P. Mackal (Image 1) (Image 2)

A particularly fine and well-balanced set, showing the full range of designs of the 1892 Pictorial Issue, with the characteristic variation in perforations (generally between 14 & 15) as encountered on this issue. The $5 perf. 12½x12 which is rare is especially notable. Very fresh. A scarce set in this quality, seldom offered complete and uniformly never hinged. These blocks demonstrate the irregular and transitional perforating practices of the issue, including partial lines of differing gauges within the same block; an unusual and technically significant feature. Perforation 12 is particularly rare, occurring only as part of these complex combinations. All large part og., the $5 and 32 c. never hinged. One small tone spot on the 32 c. Specialised material of considerable philatelic interest, ideal for the advanced student of production methods (Image 1) (Image 2)

4260 */(*) imageOfficial Stamps 1892: Exceptional group four unused horizontal pairs illustrating the famous "OFFICISL" error for OFFICIAL, comprising: 16 c. imperforate pair showing error and normal, 32 c. imperforate pair showing error and normal, large margins all round and large part og, and corresponding perforated examples with the same variety and complex perforations 14x14/12, all have fresh colour, the perforated no gum. This variety, caused by a misplaced letter “S” replacing “A”, is recorded only on the 16 c. and 32 c. values and is believed to have been corrected early in production, resulting in extremely limited surviving quantities. Pairs showing error alongside normal are of the greatest importance, clearly demonstrating the variety. Among the rarest and most celebrated errors of Liberian philately. A remarkable official government usage, sent from the Executive Mansion and addressed to Canada, representing a scarce transatlantic destination for Liberian Official mail. The franking corresponds to double the 5 c. overseas rate, an unusual and well-documented overpayment. The adhesives show faults (4 c. torn down right side) from postal handling, though remain intact and clearly tied; the cover with typical wear, creasing and aging consistent with long distance official correspondence of the period. Of the utmost rarity: one of only seven recorded covers bearing the 1892 Official issue. An exhibition-level item of considerable historical and postal significance (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

The cover is in remarkably well presereved showing only minor wear consistent with carriage, the adhesives very well preserved and clearly cancelled. Reverse with London transit (MY 18 93) in red and Pretoria arrival (JU 11 93) in black, confirming routing via Great Britain to South Africa. The franking represents an unusual multiple of the 8 c. rate, overpaying the contemporary 5 c. based tarif; an atypical and noteworthy usage for Official correspondence. Only seven covers are recorded bearing the 1892 Official issue, making this an item of considerable rarity. The envelope with faults including wear, creasing affecting stamps, and wax seal damage on reverse, as to be expected for a long distance official cover of this period. The issue was introduced following the inadequacy of the earlier small “OFFICIAL” overprint, with the larger “OS” applied beginning in October 1894. The 6 c. value was notably excluded from the original overprinting. Condition fresh colour, generally fine to very fine, large part of og. with hinging on some values ($5 never hinged). Accompanying the sheet are additional reference examples mounted on the exhibition page, including single examples of the ordinary and Official issues, a block of four, and a rare Official error showing the surcharge on the face and printed on the reverse. These supplementary pieces illustrate the complexity and production characteristics of the issue and greatly enhance the importance of the presentation. "Commerce with Caduceus" triangular issue. The collection opens with an important group of “OS” overprint studies and proofs, including practice sheets for alignment, a striking vignette block of 16 showing misaligned overprints, and multiple trial impressions in red and black. Also included are quadruple “OS” overprints on 1 c. plate proofs (no gum) and additional trial pieces illustrating the experimental nature of the overprinting process. The issued Official Service stamps are represented across values from 1c to 75c, showing different overprint colours (red, black and blue) and perforation varieties (perf. 13½, 14 & combinations), generally in fresh, never hinged condition. A specialised section is devoted to the 10 c. triangular, including roulette 7½ examples with shifted “OS” overprints (noted as from the same sheet), a rare example without overprint, and additional pieces illustrating positional and production characteristics. A strong errors and varieties section includes inverted “OS” overprints, missing overprints, colour anomalies (black instead of red), inverted centres, and a notable 2 c. missing vignette block of four, rare. Further items include black centre varieties and additional production flaws across multiple denominations. The collection continues with a group of imperforate Official Service stamps with gum, comprising pairs and singles across the key values, including the 10 c. triangular with "flat" overprint. Of particular importance is the 1912 perforate printing of the 10 c. Commerce with Caduceus, represented by a large block of twelve (perf. 12½), a block of four (compound perf. 12½ x 14), a further block of four (perf. 14), and a pair; an impressive and rarely encountered assembly of multiples from this later printing. Condition is generally fine to very fine throughout, with many fresh and well-centred examples; some minor gum or handling irregularities as to be expected in such a specialised group. A wide-ranging and research-level collection of this fascinating issue, offering significant depth in overprint studies, production varieties, and multiples, and providing outstanding potential for exhibition or further scholarly development (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6)
