Waghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1840 (Jan 29): Entire letter from Capt. (Late Major-General) Francis Jenkins written 'on the (Brahmaputra) river' at Guwahati, Assam to St. Goran, Mevagissey, Cornwall endorsed "per Overland
Mail" and "F. Jenkins" to the care of Cantor & Co. in Calcutta, prepaid "8" annas. Struck on arrival by oval framed "*FORWARDED BY / CANTOR & Co. / CALCUTTA" cachet in black. Passed to Waghorn's Agency with rare oval framed "Care of / Mr. T
Waghorn / Suez" with 'T' in black (Sidebottom type 3a), signed by George Devenish a clerk for Samuel Smith & Co. and numbered "34", with reverse showing fine "STEAM POSTAGE "9" / INLAND Do. "14" annas for a total of 1 rupee 7 annas for up to ¾
tola in weight and the obverse bearing rectangular framed "INDIA" in red of Calcutta. Carried by the EIC "Atalanta" from Bombay (Feb 29) to Suez, departing on the "HMS Megaera" from Alexandria (March 22) to Malta, and thence from Malta (March 28) on
the "HMS Prometheus" to Marseille, arriving London on April 7 with weak arrival in black on reverse; charged "2/8d." to pay on arrival (the rate for an under ½ ounce letter from Egypt). It is by no means certain that by this date Waghorn's services
offered any advantage, besides a relative amount of increased safety. An extremely scarce "Double Forwarder" entire of great appeal. Note 1: Journey time 69 days. Note 2: Major-General Francis Jenkins (1793-1866) Agent to the Governor General of
Assam, was appointed Chief commissioner for Assam in 1828 and is largely credited as the discoverer of the Assam Tea Industry. A Christian, he married a local Muslim lady Moni Phutuki. He is buried close to Guwahati Railway Station (Image 1)

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1841 (Jan 16): Entire letter from Major Eldred Pottinger in Calcutta to Dublin, Ireland struck on obverse with oval framed "Care of / Mr. Waghorn / Suez" in black (Sidebottom type 3), with
"Suez" deleted and manuscript "Cornhill, London 95, GD for S.S. & Co." (Waghorn's Agent George Devenish for Samuel Smith & Co. in Calcutta). The entire shows that by this date Waghorn's business as a Forwarding Agent for the Indian Mails had
largely ceased as the letter received no special treatmnent and arrived on the normal Steamer service via Falmouth. Rated "1s." due to pay with London datestamp (March 13) and Dublin arrival (March 15) in red on reverse. An important entire - the
latest recorded Waghorn Forwarded entire from Calcutta. Rare. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time 58 days. Note 2: The letter from Major Eldred Pottinger (1811-1843) - who famously travelled through Afghanistan in disguise arriving at Herat just
as the Persian Army (with Russian help) was about to attack Herat in 1837. Due to his and the Afghan Kamran Shah's defenders' exertions the attack, after over a year, was successfully thwarted. Thereafter he was known as the "Hero of Herat" due to
his exploits during the siege. The contents state "I have just been appointed to take charge of the Turkestan Frontier in place of an Officer who was killed in the last action with Dost Mohammed Khan. The appointment has the same salary as before but
is one requiring much larger expenditure and I think holds forth a chance of service...". Within a year Pottinger was to survive the massacre at Charikar and lead the retreat back to Kabul (Image 1)

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1841 (March 12): Entire letter from "Canton River", China to Lady Anstruther in London, with fine content concerning the First Opium War and written six days prior to the British Naval and
Land forces defeating the Chinese Qing forces at Canton; the entire endorsed at top "Care of Messrs. Waghorn & Co., via Suez and Marseilles" in, it appears, Thomas Waghorn's own hand. Mailed at Bombay with framed "To the care of / Mr. Waghorn" in
black (Sidebottom type 10), carried on the EIC "Berenice" (May 1) to Suez (May 18); thence on "HMS Polythemus" from Malta with circular "PURIFIÉ AU LAZARET / MALTE" handstamp in black and London arrival (July 2) in red and charged "1/8d." due to pay.
A very rare and most unusual entire from this conflict. Note 1: Journey time 112 days. Note 2: Content "I wrote a hurried letter when the HMS Conway (see Note 3) was standing out of the bay (by overland) to tell you all of my being free...we sailed
next day but being obliged to go slow to keep the convoy together we were too late for the fighting at this place...as we stood into the River we met dozens of corpses floating dowen the stream and saw the Forst which are people were actively
demolishing. I have since been on shore at that work myself - it is good practice in mining...My Colonel is to go away sick and this will leave me in command of the Artillery with the Expedition so that if there is any more fighting (and we expect
plenty at Amoy, Ningpo, Nanking and perhaps Peking!) I shall be in orders and perhaps get a C.B. ship. I am made a great lion of now because of my long imprisonment as people call it and I am much thinner; everybody supposes I suffered awful hardship
- it is a pity to undeceive them...We had dreadfully cold weather in prison, severe frost for three weeks, thick ice and the snow lying 8 inches deep for 10 days...so we set to and snowballed the Chinese who pronounces us mad...not one letter did
come (for us). They were all in the Golconda which as been lost with 5 Officers and 200 sepys on board...I rather hope Lord Auckland will come as Admiral Elliott is gone and Charles Elliott is such a fool that, most seriously, I think the Naval &
Military chiefs ought to, and will, suspend his power on account of madness! He burned a ship, the Cambridge, which our people had sold to the Chinese and had recaptured. She was loaded with good stores worth £15'000 at least (and all the ships
want stores) and this idiot burned it all "to strike a panic in Canton". Note 3: The "HMS Conway" accompanied the "Beagle" on Charles Darwin's voyage in Chile and the Galapagos in 1835. Note 4: The writer, Philip Anstruther (1807-1884) entered the
Madras Artillery as second lieutenant in 1824. He served in India, being made Captain in 1839. He then served in the first Chinese Opium War from 1840-1843, where he commanded the Artillery under Lord Gough at the battles of Canton, Amoy, Chusan and
others. He was captured in 1840 while on a survey near Ningpo, and kept in a cage 3 feet by 3 feet for part of his 6 month captivity. He became a Brevet Major in 1841 and was mentioned in dispatches. He received the Companion of the Order of the Bath
in 1842. Provenance: Collection Max Uehlinger, Christie's, London, 12 March 1997, lot 24 (Image 1)

by this date Waghorn's mail forwarding days were all but over. Strangely, if this letter had gone without the Waghorn endorsement, the letter would have been carried in a sealed bag from India and thus would not have been stopped in Malta for
disinfection and would have arrived a few days earlier. Provenance: Collection Samir Fikry, DF, Geneva, 29 Nov 2005, lot 20017 (Image 1)
