1883/2000 (ca.):The Magnificent Postal Stationery Collection, comprising over 600 items, formed with great care over decades and presenting an outstanding range of the proofs, specimens and exceptional usages of the field,
including most rarities and previously unrecorded items. A remarkable assembly, selected throughout with a discerning eye for quality. The collection offers a formidable array of proofs and specimens, commencing with the 1883 2c. and 4c. stationery
reply cards, lithographed by ABNC, each bearing the red overprint "Muestra" (Mena-Nr. MPC-1, 2), together with the extremely rare die proof in black of the completed head without value in tablet, with additional imprint below ABNC C-82 (DPPC-1a). The
1890 Litho by Waterlow & Sons issue are well represented, commencing with the 3 c. red card bearing the circular "Waterlow & Sons Specimen Cancelled limited" marking, an astonishing and absolutely unique item (PC-4). The 1903 issue,
lithographed by ABNC, includes an extraordinary sunken die proof on large card, probably unique, of the 2 c. black (DPPC-12), whilst the 1910 litho by Waterlow & Sons issues, shows the 2 c. black die proof with imprint at foot (PC-12), together
with a very rare 2 c. blue card with two security punch holes, bearing the red "Specimen" and additional "To Be Held For reference" markings (SPC-12). The envelopes are equally impressive, including the litho by Perkins Bacon, 1886 5 c., rare die
proof in black (DPEN-1); the 1890 issue, represented by the unique special printing bearing the unrecorded "Waterlow´Specimen" perfin and unique imprint beneath the back flap (SEN-3); and, last but not least, the 1903 stationery envelope 5 c. blue,
Type I with "Waterlow & Sons, Limited, London Wall", the unique unused example recorded (EN-5). The Impreta Lines wrappers show the magnificent set of four colour die proofs in black, red, green and blue, unique in private hands (DPW-2a-d). The
collection displays a particularly appealing group of scarce usages and destinations, among this abundance of choice items a complete reply card 2+2 c. rose, 1903 lithographed by Waterlow & Sons, sent from San Jose (11 May 1904) to Postdam,
replied to and returned from there (30 May) (PC-8); also some wreck mail, with 2 c. black card via New York to Germany, and bearing the special label "P.O. New York, October 26, 1888. This letter is part of the mail recovered from the S.S. Atlas,
from Port Limon, sunk in New York harbor by collision..." (PC-1); taxed mail with a 1890 2 c. green card, used from San Jose (16.11.1896) to New York, taxed upon arrival with US Postage due 2 c. and the marking "Collect Postage 2 Cents" (PC-3).
Further highlights include some unusual foreign destinations and exceptional overseas usages, including some extraordinary foreign uses with 2 c. card, with additional 1 centavo franking, from San Jose via San Francisco and Hong Kong to Haiphong,
China, and another one sent to Paris in 1903, redirected to Monte Carlo, Monaco (PC-3); as well as a 1890 10 c. dark brown stationery envelope with additional franking, sent registered via New York to Jerusalem, and bearing on reverse the Austrian
Post arrival marking (EN-4a). Noteworthy are rare travelling post office usages with two 1890 3 c. red cards, each with circular "Ambulante San Jose Limon" showing both serial A and B (PC-4), and rare cancellations include the exceptional usage to
Stockhlom with the star "Correos de Arenal Costa Rica" circular obliterator (PC-4), and 1906 Litho by Waterlow & Sons, 4 c. deep red-violet card to Germany, used with the large oval "Hamburg-American Line Prinz August Wilhelm", dated 22 february
1907 (PC-10). The collection further offers a fine group of stationery envelopes, highlighted by a formidable pair from the 1886 issue, showing 5 c. blue, a most exceptional use of the stationery envelope with one-line "Siquirres", addressed on board
the German ship Charlotte in Nicaragua (EN-1), together with the very scarce 10 c. orange-yellow, used with the identical obliterator, sent to Württemberg (En-2). Several rare postal usages of the 4 c. green wrapper are included, comprising rare
domestic and foreign destinations, notably an example with additional franking addressed to the Costa Rican Consul to Switzerland (W-2). An exceptional opportunity to acquire an important and comprehensive collection of Costa Rican postal stationery,
combining great rarity with a breadth of material that would be exceedingly difficult to duplicate (Image 1)

Cunard Contract Mail, Pre US-UK Treaty 1847-1848; The Postal War, Discriminatory rate 1847 (Aug 20): Entire letter from Habana, Cuba, carried privately to New York, manuscript on reverse "N. York Sept 18 -
Forwarded by Curtis Jr.", endorsed "Pr Mail Steamer Washington", on Ocean Line's second voyage from New York 23 September 1847 to Southampton 9 October. Prepaid with 24 cents, PAID handstamp applied, manuscript '1/-' British packet
rate considered discriminatory for this already paid item. Note: In 1845, the United States Congress passed an Act granting a $ 100’000 annual subsidy for each ship contracted by the US Postmaster General to carry American mail to
England and the Continent. In 1846, Ocean Steam Navigation Company was contracted to provide fortnightly service to Southampton and Bremerhaven. Two steamers, the "Washington" and the "Herman" were built. The British Government,
on behalf of Cunard, protested the start of America’s subsidised line by charging all prepaid American mail full postage from British recipients. This became the British Discriminatory Rate and marked the start of the Postal War of
1847-1849. As a response, the US postal administration charged a Retaliatory Rate for prepaid incoming British mail between 27 June 1848 and 3 January 1849. Both countries restored their rates prior to the conflict by 3 January
1849. A new Post Convention was negotiated and came into effect on 15 February 1849. Provenance: Collection Hugh Feldman; Schuyler Rumsey sale 37 (April 2010), lot 2619 (Image 1)
