strategic expansion of the Hungarian River and Sea Navigation Company (MFTR) to "nationalise" Hungarian trade routes. It entered into long-term contracts with the Hungarian state and received substantial subsidies to promote the expansion of
Hungarian foreign trade. The official registration office and home port of the fleet was Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia), which at the time belonged to Hungary. Initially, the MKT primarily served routes in the Black Sea and the eastern Mediterranean,
particularly on the routes between Marseille, Constantinople, and Odessa. Provenance: Collection John Pitts (Image 1)
