Shipmail from Syria 1840 (Nov 7): Disinfected Entire letter from Selemija / Salamiyah in Syria to Venezia, endorsed "Ibraila", struck on front by framed "NETTO DI FUORI / NETTO DI DENTRO" of Venice in red, reverse with part
circular strike of "ESPURGO LETTERE SANITA MARITTIMA IN VENEZIA" of the Maritime Health Office (both shown in Meyer p. 269). Front struck by indistinct TRIEST datestamp and weak straight-line "Leta arrta per mare" (Tchilinghirian fig 28) used in
Trieste on incoming, uncancelled adriatic Shipmail. Interesting item from the collection of Prof. Vodrazka. Note: The endorsement 'Ibraila' is difficult to understand which is also true for the journey of this cover in general. In November 1840, the
Egyptian-Ottoman War was underway which had finished the activity of the DDSG Syrian line which was established just one year ago. How this entire reached Trieste is not really clear but the "Leta arrta per mare" handstamp suggests an arrival from
the Adriatic Sea not via the Black Sea, the Danube, and Vienna (Image 1)
