1685 **/*/piece/cover/bof/(*) imageAustrian Territories Acquired by Italy (Trentino–Alto Adige)
1918-1919: Specialised Forgery & Overprint Study. A carefully
written-up and highly specialised collection presented on eighteen
exhibition pages, ex R.A. Dehn, with particular emphasis on the
identification and comparison of genuine overprints and forgeries.
11 November 1918 Overprints, Stamps of Austria overprinted “Regno
d’Italia / Trentino / 9 nov. 1918”. Set to 2 k. unused, 80 h. with
Wallner “attest,” later confirmed by Diena, 2 k. (two examples).
All examples are considered genuine and are signed. The collection
also includes a range of identified forgeries, including examples
showing a positional flaw in the setting which Dehn believed to be
characteristic of forged overprints. Also, an 11 November 1918
cover bearing the complete set, all values considered genuine.
Useful signed varieties are included throughout. 6 December 1918
Issue, set to 1 L. unused, with additional varieties. Forgeries are
shown and described for comparison. Provisional Postage Dues (Dec.
1918 – March 1919). Strong representation of Bolzano I and
especially Bolzano III, both unused and used. These issues have
only relatively recently been fully described and listed in sale
catalogues, which may explain the absence of expert signatures
(Diena, Oliva, etc.) on certain items. A philatelically contrived
example is included; genuinely used commercial examples of these
provisionals are rarely encountered. MERAN Local Issues: First
Issue: 2 h. rose unused, Second Issue: unused and used sets
(Sassone 10–12), Strip of three of the 10h arancio, Two covers are
included: Meran to Vinschgau (28.11.1918) with 2 h. (newspaper
rate) alongside 2 c. Italy, 10 h. Austrian stationery card uprated
with 10 h. Meran stamp, cancelled by the (faint) “Gremium der
Kaufmannschaft des Kurbezirks Meran” (Meran Chamber of Commerce)
handstamp. Additional material loose sheets include 2 k. and 4 k.
unused and a 12 h. unused without stop after “nov” (Sassone 5f,
cat. €2,600). A serious and research-driven study of the complex
Trentino–Alto Adige overprints and provisional issues, rich in
signed genuine examples, comparative forgeries, and scarce local
material. An essential reference-style collection for this
challenging and historically significant transitional period.

1686 **/*/piece/cover/bof/(*) imageAustrian Territories Acquired by Italy Venezia Giulia 1918–1919:
Specialised Overprint & Forgery study. A carefully written-up and
specialised collection presented on eighteen exhibition pages, ex
R.A. Dehn, with particular emphasis on the identification and
comparison of genuine overprints and forgeries in this complex and
heavily forged transitional issue. November 1918 Overprints, stamps
of Austria overprinted “Regno d’Italia / Venezia Giulia / 3. Nov.
18”. Set to 4 k., mint and used, key values signed by Diena,
comparative forged set to 4 k. included for study. A substantial
range of overprint varieties is present, including full sheets of
the 15 h. (unused) and 20 h. (used), with listed positional
varieties. Further errors include inverted, oblique, double
overprints, and combinations such as double overprint with one
oblique; providing excellent study material. Posta Aerea
Transadriatica, 5 h. and 15 h. overprinted values on cover to
Trieste, cancelled “R. MARINA – POSTA AEREA / POLA” (signed beneath
the stamps by Diena and accompanied by an RPS certificate). A rare
and highly desirable airmail usage from this short-lived period.
1918–1919 Overprints on Italy, issues overprinted “Venezia /
Giulia” on stamps of Italy, complete set to 1 L. unused. 6 December
1918 postage dues complete to 1 L., 3 January 1919 “Espresso” 25
c., unmounted mint. Varieties & additional material. Further
1918–1919 varieties are shown, with forgeries identified and
described in Dehn’s characteristic analytical style. Additional
loose material includes proofed examples such as 2 k. (two
examples, one signed Diena and Bolaffi) and 3 k. (two examples).
Catalogue value stated in excess of € 30’000. A serious and
research-oriented study of the Venezia Giulia occupation
overprints, combining signed genuine examples, full sheets, major
overprint errors, rare airmail usage, and comparative forgeries. An
authoritative and exhibition-worthy holding from this challenging
and historically significant field. Provenance: Ex John Pitts. 1687 **/*/cover/(*) imageAustrian Territories acquired by Italy - General issue 1918-1919:
Specialised Study for Trento & Trieste. A detailed and
research-oriented study of the 1918–1919 General Issue for use
throughout the occupied territories of Trento and Trieste,
presented on twenty-seven exhibition pages and including ten
covers. The collection examines the January 1919 issue in depth,
with comparative genuine and forged examples fully described.
Express stamps are included, again with both authentic and forged
overprints for study. Postage Dues: Italian postage dues
overprinted (value) / centesimi / di corona, Provisional postage
dues (December 1918 – March 1919), introduced to address shortages
of regular dues, The provisional dues are particularly interesting,
as their distribution was not tightly controlled, resulting in the
existence of dubious or possibly bogus examples; several of which
are identified and discussed here. The setting of genuine
overprints is shown to contain numerous minor positional
variations. Of particular importance is the major error: 2 c. on 2
c. red-brown block of four with incorrect numeral “3” instead of
“2” (Sassone 2da), unused with large part og., some perf.
separation between rows and gum tone mark (Sassone records only
five known examples of this error). The collection also includes:
twelve sheets dedicated to illustrating setting variations
(identified but not fully plated), and loose sheets of the General
Issue. A serious and analytical study of the General Issue
overprints, combining scarce errors, full sheets, covers, and
forgery comparisons; a valuable reference-style holding in this
complex and transitional field. Sassone = c. € 17’000. Provenance:
