DDSG Shipmail in the Aegean Sea, 1839ca.: Part letter to Constantinople with missing first page including provenance and date information, struck by extremely rare oval ornamental "D.S.G. / MARIA DOROTIA"
handstamp in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 280; unknown to Hurt & Kelly), this ship's cancellation applied on board of the first DDSG vessel, the 'Maria Dorothea' coming in service in 1834 and running on the Smyrna - Constantinople as
well as Salonicco - Constantinople lines. Cert. Goller (2026). Note: The only ship's cancellation known from the pre-1845 period. The misspelling with 'D.S.G.' instead of 'D.D.S.G.' and DOROTIA instead of the Italian DOROTEA
speaks for a local production of the handstamp. Rarity: The present cover is one of two recorded with a DSG MARIA DOROTIA handstamp, both from the same correspondence and in the same handwriting to Giudici & Coressi in
Constantinople. Both part letters have the first page missing which presumably included place and date of the writing. Prof Vondrazek deducted from other letters in the same handwriting that this cover was despatched in Smyrna and
made its journey on the 'Maria Dorothea' to Constantinople. Tchilinghirian & Stephen give Salonico and 1839ca. as place and date of despatch of the two covers which had been in 1963 in the collections of Mr. Rathje, Copenhagen and
Leon Dubus, respectively. Provenance: Collection Leon Dubus (1963). Reference: Displayed and discussed in the publication "Der Postdienst der Ersten k.k. priv. Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft" by Prof. Vodrazka. (Image 1)
