4473 cover image1919 (Nov 12): England to Australia first Aerial Post, envelope
addressed to Cheltenham, Victoria carried in the Vickers Vimy
G-EAOU flown by Ross Smith, Keith Smith, J.M. Bennett, and W. H.
Shiers, bearing the blue flight vignette, tied upon arrival in
Melbourne by oval "FIRST AERIAL MAIL / RECEIVED / 26 FEB 1920 /
GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA" handstamp, an information strike
alongside such as the light "PER / VICKERS "VIMY" AEROPLANE / TO
AUSTRALIA" handstamp applied by Ross Smith in violet to the mail.
The envelope shows an embossing inside from Bombay, therefore most
certainly originating en route in India or Persian Gulf / Iraq. Lot
includes a small portion of the original letter, written by the
addressee's son, mentioning Ross Smith and this first aerial
service. An unusually fine cover from this famous flight.
Reference: The Ross Smith Stamp & its Postal History by Tom
Frommer, published in 2011. Note: On arrival in Darwin, Smith
telegraphed the Australian prime minister requesting a
commemorative stamp be issued. The commemorative label was designed
by A.I.F. war artist Lieutenant Benson, and was printed in
Melbourne on Crown over "A" watermarked paper. A total of 576
labels were made. Of these, 346 were attached to incoming mail
carried on the trip. It is reported that 150 were destroyed, and
that some of the 87 unused labels were presented to officials and
the four crew members. (Image 1) (Image 2)

4474 **/*/bof/(*) imageAustralian States: Collection contained with a large stock book,
with a wide-ranging representation of the classic issues of New
South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western
Australia, including both used and unused material. Strength
throughout, New South Wales with good represented of early
imperforate issues through to side profile types, including higher
values and multiples; Queensland with small selection of Chalons
and later issues including a large marginal block of 1 s.; South
Australia with useful range including imperforate and perforated
issues to higher values; Western Australia with a good range of the
Swan issues across multiple denominations, shades and printings,
including several multiples; and Victoria with early issues and
later line-engraved types. The collection shows particular depth in
multiples and positional pieces, with numerous blocks and marginal
examples, offering scope for further study of plates, shades and
printings. Condition variable as to be expected, though many fine
to very fine examples noted. A most attractive and valuable
foundation collection of the Australian States, with clear
potential for expansion and specialisation. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9) (Image 10) (Image 11) (Image 12) (Image 13) (Image 14) (Image 15) (Image 16) (Image 17) (Image 18) (Image 19) (Image 20) (Image 21) (Image 22) (Image 23)

4476 **/*/bof image1913/48: Exceptional unused collection, with a strong emphasis on
multiples, imprint blocks and positional pieces. Commencing with a
small selection of 1912 Kangaroo issues, noted two 10 s. grey &
pink (SG 14), including a range of shades and several marginal
examples, followed by extensive KGV Heads with numerous blocks of
four and imprint pieces, showing a useful degree of printings and
shades as well as imprint blocks. The later issues are particularly
well represented, including 1930 Sturt, Kingsford Smith Airmails,
Macarthur, and the 1935 Silver Jubilee, with a notable
concentration of imprint and positional blocks throughout (SG
156/15158). The 1937/49 definitives are present in quantity,
including multiple imprint blocks up to £1, fresh and well
preserved (SG 164/178). Selection of Officials and overprints noted
in places. A highly attractive and well-formed collection with
considerable depth in multiples, far exceeding a basic
representative holding. Condition generally fine to very fine, with
much unmounted mint. A most appealing lot for the specialist. 4617 **/*/bof/(*) imageBahamas 1859/1990: A substantial and well-formed predominantly mint
collection housed in a stockbook, the early issues showing a useful
balance of used and unused, thereafter almost exclusively mint with
large part to full original gum. The collection commences with QV
issues including 1859/62 Chalon Heads with unused examples
(including pair of SG2) and selected used, followed by a strong
representation of later QV with 1884/90 set (SG47/57) well
represented, together with additional shades and multiples. Further
QV issues include unused examples of 1863/80 4 d. bright rose
unused Brandon certificate (SG35) and 1882 4 d. rose Crown CA wmk.
with RPSL certificate (SG41), and 1862 6 d. lavender-grey used RPSL
certificate (SG19) and 6 d. lilac used BPA certificate (SG19a). The
KEVII and KGV periods are well covered with a good degree of
completion, including numerous multiples, notably blocks of four,
marginal examples and positional pieces. The War Tax issues are
well represented with a range of settings, blocks and of particular
note is 1918 1 d. double overprint with one inverted, unused
(toned) with certificate (SG93a), a scarce and desirable variety.
Later issues from KGVI through to QEII are largely complete, many
in fresh condition, with additional strength in commemorative sets
and definitive series, again including blocks and marginal pieces.
Condition is generally clean and fresh with good colour throughout,
the majority with large part original gum, earlier issues showing
the usual variability. A most useful and attractive collection with
particular strength in the QV to KGV periods, offering scope for
further expansion and specialist development.
