Austrian P.O. 1864: Arms 15 s. brown, perf. 9½ used with astonishing 25 s. grey-lilac in a horzontal strip of five, tied by three strikes of "RUSTSCHUK" circular datestamp (July 24) in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 877). "A/PD"
in black and Strasbourg transit (July 29) in blue on obverse and Auxerre arrival on reverse. A wonderful mixed issue franking - whilst marked for triple rate in manuscript, it appears this led to confusion as the cover is paid in full at quadruple
rate of 140 soldi (4 x 35 s.). A unique franking from a Bulgarian (or indeed Levant Office). A superb cover and Levant Postal History rarity. Signed E. Diena, C. Raybaudi. Provenance: Collection Achille Rivolta, Harmers SA, Lugano, 12 Feb 1992, lot

Sofia, Austrian P.O. 1864: Arms 5 s. rose, perf. 9½, a horizontal pair and 15 s. brown in a horizontal pair, used on 1867 entire letter to Calais, France centrally tied by "SOFIA" circular datestamp (Aug 11) in black
(Tchilinghirian fig. 864). "A/PD" handstamp in black below and Strassbourg entry datestamp (Sept 7) in red on obverse, reverse with Vienna (Sept 4) transit. Illustrated in "Austrian Post Offices in the Levant" by Hans Smith on page 160. Faults but
one of just two known covers utilising the 1864 5 soldi and the sole cover known bearing the 1864 15 soldi from Sofia. Exceptional and rare. Cert. Ferchenbauer (2013). Provenance: Collection Hans Smith, Corinphila, Zurich, 31 Oct 2013, lot 1421.
Note: Tchilinghirian states "It is worthy of note that the 1864 issue (used in Sofia) is only represented by 5 loose examples and one cover (ex Franz See) in the Tchilinghirian & Stephen census of the Blecher, Blomfield, Felser, Kohane, Mazloum,
Moreton, Mossirson, Poulie, Rosenzweig, Scaher, Steindler & Walker collections". There were no covers in the Houser collection either. (Image 1)
