Ironed vertical crease at left but an outstanding example of this rare stamp. Signed Thier. Cert. BPA (2020) Scott 5 = $ 35'000 / Gi = £ 35'000. SALONICA AU 7 13" to Pressburg then Hungary; the other with King George V die, surcharged 1 Piastre, sized 290 x 150 mm, uprated with five ½ d. Levant stamps (Gi L16) from "... 3305 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Naples 1898 (Sept 16): Registered cover from Constantinople, British Post Offices in Turkey to Adelaide, South Australia bearing 1887/90 British Levant 40 pa. on 2½ d. and 80 pa. on 5 d. cancelled by “British Post Office / Constantinople” datestamp and prepaying 120 paras (3 piastres) for double rate of 80 pa. and 40 pa. registration for a ship letter to South Australia. The cover is addressed in both Turkish Arabic and French to the Lord Mayor of Adelaide. Flap tear on reverse on opening, otherwise fine and rare. The only cover recorded from the British Post Offices in Turkey to the Australian Colonies. Route: Departed Constantinople 16 Sept 1898 by steamer to Alexandria (24 Sept). Orient Line: Departed Alexandria per “Ormuz” via Suez Canal (25 Sept) and Albany (20 Oct) to Adelaide, arriving 24 Oct 1898 (38 days). (Image 1) (Image 2)
