3376 cover imageIncoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1891 (May 17): Seychelles 4 c. postal stationery card used with 1890 4 c. carmine & green from Seychelles to Sydney, New South Wales, neatly cancelled by barred numeral “B64” and prepaying 8 cents rate for a postal Card to New South Wales. Seychelles datestamp on obverse with French packet datestamp and Sydney arrival on the reverse. Scarce usage of the Seychelles first issue on cover to a rare destination. The only pre-UPU cover recorded from the Seychelles to the Australian Colonies. Route - Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes: Departed Seychelles 17 May 1891 via Albany (28 May) and Adelaide (31 May) to Melbourne (2 June); by rail to Sydney, arriving 3 June 1891 (17 days). 6204 cover image1864 (Dec): Envelope to Mme Cordier in Paris with enclosed eight page letter datelined "Mahé le 20 ...bre 1864" (small portion missing), endorsed "Suez / Paqt. français" and bearing Mauritius 4 d. and 1 s. pen-cancelled, having been privately carried, probably to Bombay, where the adhesives were not accepted, the 1 s. additionally tied by handstruck "18" (décimes) with French "POS. AN. V. SUET PAQ. F" octagonal entry datestamp (Dec 15) in red below, showing framed "INDIA UNPAID" and handwritten note "non double" at left, having been forwarded via Aden with "ADEN-STR.-POINT" single arc datestamp and PARIS arrival (Dec 16) on reverse. 6205 cover imageFrench Maritime Mail Seychelles, 1869 (Sept 1): Entire with "Mahé, Seychelles" dateline to Dijon, France franked at military concession rate with 20 c. Laureated Napoleon tied by anchor in dotted lozenge with "COR. D ARM. / LIG. T PAQ. FR. No. 1" cds at right, month slug inverted, framed PD at centre, PARIS transit and arrival backstamps (Sept 26). Note: A recently discovered cover from the Messageries Imperiales shipping agent in Mahé, M. Dominjod addressed to his brother in law, M. Louis Cordier. The French Post Office at Mahé was opened from 1864 to 1870, the agent corresponded back to France over this period. Of this correspondence of eleven covers only three bore French stamps. Note: Only two examples known. Not recorded by Higgins & Gage or Robson Lowe.
