British Consul in Suez with Egypt 1866 1 pi. claret, slightest corner fault, tied by "POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE / SUEZ" cds (April 15) with information strike at right somewhat overlapping the British P.O. in Suez datestamp in black; the 1 piastre
paying the 'Port to Port' Egyptian rate in full. Reverse with manuscript date of receipt "17.4.66". An outstanding and extremely rare cover. Signed Todd AIEP. Note: An important incoming cover to Saudi Arabia and one of the earliest known from the
West utilising the nascent Egyptian Postal Office. Nearly all previous covers utilised the Ottoman Posts. Just five covers are recorded with this franking: one ex Samir Fikry, one ex Peter Smith, another in a private collection in Saudi Arabia and

1916/17: Six "Philby" covers all endorsed at top "On Field Service I.E.F D" and addressed to his mother Mrs. M.B. Philby in Camberley, England, each counter-signed by H. St. John Bridger Philby, whilst political agent in Iraq
and in Nejd - he was sent to the Nejd in 1917 - where he eventually 'arranged' the take-over by Nejd of the Hejaz to form Saudi Arabia under to King Abdulaziz ibn Saud. A remarkable group with one cover bearing "Sukeshsheyukh" cds (7 Nov 1916),
another with "Base Office D" cds, another with "Zubair" cds (29 March 1918) and one with green "OPENED UNDER MARTIAL LAW" label; all bear circular "PASSED CENSOR / D" handstamps in red. A very rare group. Note: H. St. John Bridger Philby (1885-1960)
was the father of the Soviet spy H. A. 'Kim' Philby who defected to Russia in 1963. (Image 1)
