3301 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Naples 1890 (Aug 14): Cover from Tatsi, Bolivia to Melbourne, Victoria bearing 1887 Bolivia 5 c. blue, rouletted, two examples indistinctly cancelled with rose sender's handstamp of Tatsi. Carried by the French packet and by rail via Paris to Naples and with multiple transit datestamps on the reverse. On arrival in Melbourne, the cover was locally redirected. Minor cover blemishes, but a rare origin to Australia. Believed to be the only cover recorded from Bolivia to the Australian Colonies. Route: Departed Tatsi 14 Aug 1890 overland via Jujuy (19 Aug) to Buenos Aires. French steamer "Nerthe", departed Buenos Aires (23 Aug) to Bordeaux (15 Sept). By rail via Paris (16 Sept) and Modane (18 Sept) to Naples. Orient Line: Departed Naples (22 Sept) per “Orient” via Suez Canal, Albany (18 Oct) and Adelaide (22 Oct) to Melbourne, arriving 23 Oct 1890 (70 days). (Image 1) (Image 2)
