3368 cover imageIncoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1883 (May 22): Cover from St. Denis, Réunion to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1876 France 30 c. yellow-brown on yellow, a horizontal pair cancelled by French Ligne T Paquebot datestamp (May 22) and prepaying 60 centimes for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to New South Wales. On the reverse are datestamps for Réunion and Sydney arrival. Some minor peripheral cover imperfections, otherwise fine and very rare. The only cover recorded from Réunion to the Australian Colonies. Route - Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes: Departed St. Denis 22 May 1883 per “Caledonian” via Mauritius, Adelaide (16 June) and Melbourne (18 June) to Sydney, arriving 20 June 1883 (57 days). REUNION without accent 40 c. orange, a right marginal horizontal strip of three as well as 1 fr. olive, a single adhesive from the lower right sheet margin and a horizontal strip of four (Yv 14+16), tied by "REUNION SAINT PIERRE" cds in blue, information strike and framed R in the same ink alongside, reverse with Shipmail "LA REUNION A MARSEILLE" octagonal datestamp, "REUNION / POINTE DES GALETES" transit and STRASSBURG arrival (March 29) cds. Envelope roughly opened at base on reverse as flap was stuck down with wax seals, now missing, margin close at base of second 1 f. stamp, others with good to large. A fine and rare cover, signed Calves Yv = € 4'700. Note: The cover is directed to Joseph August Schorong who served as bailiff of Strassburg. Provenance: Collection Ing. ITALIA', carried by SM83 I-ATOS from Cape Verde Nov. 18, further another registered cover from Brasov (Feb. 12th 1941) to Buenos Aires franked with 173 Lei, carried by SM83 I-ARIS frp, Cape Verde Feb. 20th 1941.
